Yes but you have to unbolt the K member and let it drop about three inches. Maybe taking the intake off would help.
I just put one in from the top and the intake hits the cowl. I had to jack the body up and drop the k member a few inches.
I've also pulled one right out with hood still on the car but the trans taken out first.

dont want to have to do that the car receiving the motor and tranny, sitting right next to the one that im taking it out of, already has the front suspension in so I want to be able to just drop in the motor+tranny

no you dont need to drop the k member. i just took mine out last week. you need to remove the engine pedestal(what the engine mount connects to). and it will come right out with alot of room to spare. took me about 2 hours.
take off all the front engine accessories, take out the radiator, disconnect all wires
take off all the front engine accessories, take out the radiator, disconnect all wires

Engine pedestals out, the pan hits the K member, the intake hits the cowl, the front accessories don't hit anything.
Should rename this post "list 100 or more ways to remove an LS1"

Like I said in the first post, and the second, it will hit the pan and the intake. You either need to take the intake off or drop the K member down. You don't need to remove the front accessories.
