i once heard about some list that was made that rated the best engines ever made. somebody told me that ls1 wasnt even in the top ten, and i know the list was fairly new. i have no idea why and in no way agree with it, but i wanted to see if anybody had heard about this list too.
what made me so mad was that fords modular v8 was top three, and i know i heard about it on this site too.

It was actually, I either saw it on a television program not to long ago or on in motor trend or car and driver. but it was in the top 10 assuredly.

I mean bang for your buck you cant beat it but by todays standards its outdated, just like the LT1 lead to the LS1, there are far supior engines on the market today LS3, LS7, the LSX, etc. although the LS1 is what started everything. I mean I dont think anyone is goin to take a LS1 over a LS9

^ for the price difference you could make that LS9 look silly. ![Nod](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_nod.gif)
But for what I think makes the LS1 great. Is
About the M3 comment, those motors are just like the S2000's motors in a sense in that they are about maxed out from the factory. Mods give little to sometimes no gain. I seen a test where they compared the LS3 to a Mercedes DOHC motor and guess what....the Merc. killed the LS3. But then you go to looking at the difference in cost. The Merc motor cost about 50k more. No BS. And it came factory with CNC'd heads and all that business. I don't know about you but I will take the cheaper one and modify it the way I want it. Save money and make more power. The LS motors are great bang for the buck. They are really hard to beat in that category.

But for what I think makes the LS1 great. Is
- Great flowing heads
- Lightweight(weighing less than alot of 6 cyl.'s)
- Dependable (they can be broke but when taking care of they are very good)
- Potential (in stock form they are nothing too serious but look at how some of these guys are making 500 + at the wheels all motor, that's 575+ at the motor and on pump gas no less. Try that in any other motor under 350 CI without a power adder. They are incredibly efficient.

^well put....
A lot of points have been made. I find it funny that an engine that was brought to market in 97 is still able to hang with a lot of today's competitors. I've owned a few Mustangs and Ford said they went to the OHC design for better fuel economy but I've been able to get better mpg in my A4 with mods in sig over a less modded Mustang.....
Besides we all know GOD and Chuck Norris fathered our engines....

Im not trying to diss on the ls1 at all but, 1st of all the 5.9 liter with a 198hp is just plain bad engine, idk how you make 200hp from a 5.9 liter, 2nd of all i think the ls1 could have obviously been much better b/c look at the m3's, straight 6 3.2 liter puts down 340hp..... once again not trying to diss on the ls1 but obviously could have technically been much better, oh and the new m3's 4 liter v8 which putts out 412hp...... just saying
