I bought a used 2000 trans am A4. If i understand correctly, the original owner could have got either a 2.73 or a 3.23 rear gear. Is there any way to find out what my car has?

Incorrect. WS6's could have 2.73's. 3.23's were an A4 option. I believe all the other A4 models were like this, including SS, TA and Z28 but not sure about all of them. M6 I think only had 3.42's.

2.73's are the standard gears for all Auto equipped LS1 F-bodies
3.23's were optional but also Mandatory on all SS, Firehawk and WS6 Cars.
It was not part of those Pkgs but was a required option that you paid extra for if your car was equipped with a Slushbox.
All M6 equipped cars recieved 3.42's End of Story

No you are right it is a seperate option but the Factory made it a requirement when the WS6 Pkg was ordered. Since a WS6, SS and Firehawk are The Premier Performance pkgs they wanted the best possible set ups even if you ordered an Auto. Same goes for the LT1 cars of `96-97.
