I like torque.
I remember when the LS1's first came out, I had a '88 GTA L98 (TPI 350) at the time. Rated at 230hp/345 tq, but TQ peak was way down low. Those long runners made them torque monsters, but they start to run out of steam right around the same point the LS1 really starts to wake up.
First time I drove an A4 LS1 car in '99 (a 98 Formula, basically the same car I have now) I thought it felt much slower than my GTA.
Of course it wasn't, for example the best I ran with that GTA was 14.9 @ 93, and my '00 A4, 2.73 Formula runs 13.6 @ 104. Obviously the LS1 was way faster, but it just lacked the low end punch of the TPI motor.
Even now, my car does not impress me at all off the line unless I floor it, under normal driving it feels slow. I still miss that TPI once in a while.
Torque is king on the street. I tought that lesson well to a buddy with a mid 90's Taurus SHO, he thought his car was lighter, so with a 220hp V6 and five speed he'd be way faster than my GTA with "only" 10 more HP. Nope, haha. Killed 'im 3 out of 3.
