Sunpro Tach Problem

After sifting through the threads related to this I have not solved my problem. I have an LM7 5.3 2003 truck engine that I have transplanted into a 59 Chevy Truck. I wanted to add a cheap tach until I could get a speedometer working.
According to what I've read the green wire from the tach should work attached to the white wire (pin 10) on the PCM Harness. I get the appropriate 9.5 volts from this wire but it doesn't work with the tach. I also tried switching the tach from 8 to 6 to 4 cylinder mode.
I read a thread where someone suggested splicing the green wire into the Crank Angle Sensor wire. This provided the tach with too much pulse leading to an indicated idle speed of over 5000.
Any other ideas?
