Pretty much any cam that will make decent power and be worth the money of the swap needs a stall.. You could look into a GM Hotcam if you don't want anything that is too big of a step up and trying to stray from the converter, but in the end may wish you would have just bitten the bullet and upgraded the stall..

Taken from the sticky....
Do i need a stall with a cam???
Usually. Most people tune the car for the cam which involves raising the idle speed on the car. Without a stall, you will have to just stand on the brakes to keep the car still because the engine is now idleing at 800rpm. Also, a bigger cam shifts the power band of the car higher, a stall enables you to jump into the cam's powerband faster so youll be faster.
I would get a stall first as you will get more performance from it

^^The Trex would not be the cam he needs. With that cam he would have to have his
idle raised so high with a stock stall the car will load the stock converter up at a stop light. And thats a pain. If you dont have the money for a stall you're gonna need a cam thats got the same idle speed close to the stock cam. Like what was mentioned before the 2001 LS6 cam is a good choice since its cheap. Another one you can look at that makes great
power and still idles @ 600prm is the GT2-3 cam from Lingenfelter. A guy i know istalled one on his 2004 GTO LS1 and he now runs mid-12's, and that was only with the GT2-3 cam a cold air kit and headers. And he used to run 14.0"s before the install. But our cars are alot lighter than a GTO so you can just get a lid and filter and and either cam and you'll love it Hope i could help. If you have anymore questions just ask. Enjoy.

^^now i see you might get a stall...its a good idea for the shift kit...it makes up
for what tuning misses....The Transgo-HD 2 is a good one. It will help take the loosness
out of the tranny. But you'll still need tuning with a converter even with a shift kit.
You need to have torquemanagement removed, you can custom your shift speeds, you can set the converter lock-up mph.
I forgot to add the Vig.3200 is a killer street converter...dont be tempted
to go the cheap route here...Yank and Vig. are the most proven and
the most reliable...stay away from cheapy's like TCI.

Tick Performance Polluter Cam
The Polluter: a new LS1 camshaft custom designed by Tick Performance and expert GM Tuner Alvin Anderson of PCMForLess.
Big cams make big horsepower in these LS1 cars - no surprise there. When we begin testing our Polluter cam, one factor was a huge surprise: the TORQUE! This cam made 417rwhp & 391rwtq in a regular, every day cam only 2001 Camaro SS with cheap headers and an LS6 intake. No bells, whistles, dyno tricks or crazy expensive parts: the Tick Performance Polluter Cam makes great numbers and drives like a dream. For you nitrous guys: this cam absolutely LOVES to be sprayed on! Check out the bottom graph for our results on a Zex 125hp shot.
