Strong smell of gas from rear of car...
My 95 Trans Am has a very strong smell of gasoline from the rear of the car. There are no visible signs of leaking anywhere. I've heard that the seal around the gas tank/fuel pump can go bad..... I'm dropping it off at a repair shop later in the week. I just though I would see what you guys thought.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Maybe it's just the evap canister or associated hoses. There's also a vent hose/filter back there that might be missing. Just a couple ideas

An evap canister purge valve circuit code (26) is the only one I'm aware of. I'd jack the car up and pull the LR tire and look around first before bringing it to a shop. http://shbox.com has diagrams of the '95 evap system and components. Good luck with it, hope it's something easy.

....When it comes to the luck I have it's never something easy!
BTW is the evap system something that is known to be problematic?

Don't know, but if the purge isn't working and/or the canister gets saturated you can get a fuel smell.

My sister had the same symptoms ('97 Chevy Blazer) and she had no codes on her car. Turns out the whole top of her tank had rotted out. She even took it to several people to have it looked at and the third one actually took the time to crawl underneath her car. He placed his hand on top of the tank and there was no top, it was gone for the most part.

My gas smell turned out to be a busted fuel tank vent valve. I think 98s are like LT1 years in how the gas venting is done. Thread:
