Default Trip odometer resetting?!!

So on occasion, when I turn my car on after sitting, the trip odometer resets and the gauges will all shoot up to the top, come back down then go to normal. But then sometimes if the cars only sitting for half hour maybe and I start again, everythings normal? what is going on here?

Is it a '99? Was a common problem with low battery voltage. GM issued a TSB on it to replace the gauge cluster - but a good battery makes it go away.

TSB# was 99-08-49-009 about trip odo resetting, doesn't mention the gauges sweep, but usually happened at the same time. If the battery is a few years old bring it somewhere for a free load test.

does that mean I could go get a new cluster now or is it too late? Mine was doing that but I got a new battery that stopped the flickering lights and a slew of other problems previously blamed on the alternator.

Work for TSBs is only free for vehicles still under warranty, so you could get a new one but you would have to pay for it

My 99 had the same problem many years ago, every time the temp dropped below freezing it would reset. Fortuanatly i was still under warranty as they swapped my cluster out for me.
