Default Interesting Problem...

I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this in or not, but i have a slight problem and need a diagnosis. I have a 98' Z28 with full bolt-ons, and ms3 cam, and a yank ss 3600 stall. Anyway, I was driving to school yesterday down a backroad and was slowing down at a stop sign (probably 30 mph) when i heard a noticably loud clunk (it almost sounded like i hit something but there wasn't anything in the road) and my car shut off out of nowhere. I tried restarting the car but there was nothing (it makes noise like it's going to start for about 1 second but never makes it further than that and then doesn nothing.) So then I got out and cut the accessory drive belt off hoping that maybe the water pump or something had locked up... and it didn't change anything. My motor is a stock rebuild with about 12,000 miles on it, and my transmission is questionable b/c i don't know the history on the car before i owned it. There's no coolant/oil leaking anywhere... the engine has always had enough oild and it has been changed regularly (it also has a ported ls6 pump) It didn't really sound like a rod or anything... it was just wierd. I tried starting it in neutral too and still nothing. I haven't had a chance to make it out to try to turn the car over by hand or check the oil yet so that's next on the list. It was just the most random thing as the car was running just fine with no signs of problems and then for it to happen with SLOWING DOWN of all things lol. I just figured I would give this a shot in case someone else has had a similar issue Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

So it won't crank over? Timing chain could have broke. Have seen that before.....

No, it just 'chugs' (or whatever sound a starter makes) for like a second and then goes silent :/ It's got a brand new (as of the rebuild so ~12k miles) Ls2 timing chain and gear set but i suppose it's possible... silly cars lol

It turns over for a sec then locks up then?
Yea your right need to turn the motor over by hand & make sure all is well.

My dad had the day off friday and he said he pulled all but two of the plugs out and messed with it. He said he was able to turn it backwards a little bit but when it tried to turn it 'foreward' it felt like it was 'binding up' but not locked... hmmm.... I guess i'll go pull the valve covers even though it's snowing lol. Anything I should look for in particular aside from broken rockers?

Ok, so i just pulled out the other plug (the only one still in now is the rear passenger's side, I was freezing my ***** off so i just left it in there b/c i didn't have my 'special' breaker bar to get it out lol) Anyway, none of the rockers are broken... the springs all look fine.... i can turn it counterclockwise between roughly 90 and 180 degrees of crankshaft rotation (from where it stops turning) before it locks up again, turns like any other motor does by hand... but locks up when i try to keep turning it either direction... the rockers move a little when it turn it (small turns a little at a time) so the timing chain must still be fine. It makes a sort of non-metallic "thud" when it does stop turning... I dunno. Any ideas? Thanks again for your help

Real tough to diagnose without seeing it. I know it's a lot of work, but i think the answer will be behind your timing cover.

If the cam bolts backed out, the gear could be "hanging" on the cam. This would allow the bottom end to turn a little - while the cam is also turning just enough for you to see some movement in the rocker arms. This could also cause it the engine to bind and not turn a full circle. This would also explain why it happened when you were slowing down.

Just a guess.

Thanks I hadn't thought of that I was thinking maybe the reluctor wheel fell off or something but that sounds more probable. Thanks again!
