Leaking coolant problem

Leaking coolant problem?? Advise Ok so my 1998 z28 has a leak somewhere. I can smell it and the car warms up way too quickly to 210*. Did a quick look under the hood today while at work and could not find any obvious leaks. What happens when I start the car it will warm up real quick to 210* the fans will activate and it will hold there if I am sitting in traffic, and then as I drive on it will drop to the 180* mark, but my car has never had such a fluctuation. Any ideas on where to start looking in detail? I just don't feel like ripping everything out or replacing stuff until I hit on the problem.

Re: Leaking coolant problem?? Advise Nope, I couldn't even find an obvious leak. I can smell it though when I stick my nose by the front of the motor. There is no obvious balloning of any hoses. More than likely the water pump. I will have to do more investigation when I have time. Just trying to get a feel of what others may have experienced when something in their cooling system was failing.
Re: Leaking coolant problem?? Advise do an oil change and take it somewhere to have some analysis done....If you got water in your oil...you got a leak at the seals....usually waterpump.....
also sometimes if your thermostat is getting ready to die it can start to stick..and you will see the "surge" you are talking about.
also..could just be a faulty sensor..the stock guages are just crap...do an autotap and find out for real

Re: Leaking coolant problem?? Advise Same thing happened with my car, ended up being the water pump. Smelled anti-freeze like crazy, but didn't see any leaking. Got a die kit, still nothing. Then a few days later, in a blaze of glory, anti-freeze all over the front of the motor, goodbye water pump. Supposedly the water pump is one of those weak spots on the LS1s. Just replace it now and see if it fixes the problem, cause even if its not the problem now, it more then likely will be some time down the road.

Re: Leaking coolant problem?? Advise Update: Replaced the water pump, the seal on the back side of it had failed. All is better now and the car runs 10-15* cooler. What else could 170.00 bucks buy ya right. Worked out allright, NAPA had the pump brand new with a lifetime warantee for 160.00 + tax. Was the middle of the road for prices.
