Default Steering knock?

Not sure how to explain, but on my 97 Formula I hear a slight knock in the steering system right in the "dead zone" (more noticeable at slower speeds). Any ideas on what is causing this? Thanks!

Probably a Ball Joint on a Tie Rod End.

I don't really notice it when turning (I'll listen for it next time I take the car for a ride). I just happened to notice it when I was backing up (turn left then turn right). I also tried turning the wheel back and forth slightly with the car off and I can hear the knock right at the "dead zone" I was trying to describe earlier.

And yes, it's like a small pop.

UPDATE -- Seems less noticeable with the wheel tilted all the way up vs driving position.

I had the same "popping" sound on mine. But I also had a little play in my steering as well. I replaced the rack and that took care of that....

When I checked it out today, it seemed like it was doing it a bit more when cold. After driving for a few minutes, it seemed like it was almost gone. Is there something I should lubricate?

No, but I did check the level and it was good.

I'm going back to my other theory (where the knock disappears with the wheel tilted all the way up, comes back when I tilt it back down to driving position).

Now it seems to knock even when the wheel is tilted all the way up. Since I can't seem to figure out where the noise is coming from, I might have to let the dealer look at it.

About a week and a half ago I got it back from the dealer, they tell me they found some loose bolts in the steering rack, so they tightened them. It seemed fine when I drove it home, now it seems the knock is back (kinda intermittent).

Steering does feel a bit more responsive since the bolts were tightened, but I am still wondering what exactly is causing the knock (still does it more when in driving position, much less when it is tilted either all the way up or all the way down).

Descending order of probability:

#1 - Inner tie rod socket.
#2 - Rack.
#3 - Steering U-joint coupler.

I jiggled the steering u-joint coupler (under the hood) and was able to replicate the knock (sounds like it's right by the firewall). How hard is that to fix? And what parts ould I need? Or is something like that better for the dealer to look at (now that I have a better idea where the noise is coming from)?

I think it is near the steering rack (somewhere underneath the plastic covering near the bottom of the exhaust manifold). I notice more steering play when it is cold vs when warm. Could it be the rag joint going bad? If so, can I still get a replacement?
