Is this a fair price for a tune up?

all of you are confusing dropping the pan and changing the trans filter with actually changing the tranny fluid. The auto in these cars probably takes around 12 quarts to fill dry. If you drop the pan you will only change about 3-4 quarts of the fluid.
To change the fluid completely it will be hooked up to a trans flush machine by connecting to the cooler lines. The trans will pump the old fluid into the machine, and the machine will pump the new fluid into the trans at the same rate. Doing it this way will change all of the fluid in the trans. This will cost around 100 dollars to do no matter where you take it.

i didn't say 1k wasn't outragious, I was simply explaining to some other posters talking about changing the tranny fluid.
I have worked at several shops, and I would imagine that the total for all of that would total close to 1k. All of the parts listed earlier and their prices are what you or me would pay if we walked into the store and bought them. A shop is going to have mark up on any parts installed. Most shops it is 100% markup. The markup is to cover warranty issues and other costs of a shop. Then add labor on top of that, and it adds up really quick.

But lets say they do the job right. Its $100 for the tranny fluid and filter change....then less than $150 for the rest of the parts for everything else and 1-2 hours of a mechanically declined persons time to do the rest.
Maybe $1,000 is what the dealer and some shops would charge...but only a sucker would ever do it.

You know as well as everyone here though...that most places, if you leave your car they won't change all the fluid. They'll drop the pan, replace the filter and put the pan back on and top it off.

My car is in his shop and should be ready by tomorrow around noon. I did agree to the 1K price before he started any of the work. Probably not going to sleep too soundly tonight, I think I may have made a really bad decision

When you go pick up the car ask to see the tranny filter and plugs. Just tell him you need to check the plugs and you want to see how dirty the tranny filter was. If you say it that way it won't seem like you're trying to catch him not doing something. But man, you have tio make damn sure EVERYTHING got done for that $1,000.
Another reason to do these types of easy things yourself, you know 100% they will be done right.

alright let's not go putting the man down... sucks but you learn **** the hard way, OP you had a gut instinct, next time go with it, if something don't seem right with a shop it most likely isn't. You have to look around for a shop you trust before you go letting them do 300+ dollar work on your ride like ls6427 said you can't be too sure about a lot of shops doing a thorough job especially when working on tight cars like the f-body's... i just recently made an impulse buy 65lb injectors siemma deckas (SP?) for 500 bucks, come on here and look at the sale threads and there are siemens going for 300... 42lb'rs going for 150-200
granted mine are going to be brand new but still can't seem to feel like i jumped into an impulse... live and learn and ask before you do, just because a shop has your vehicle doesn't mean you have to have them do the work
oh yeah i'd call first thing in the morning and see if he did the work already... you never know worth a shot
