Default oil gauge wont budge past 40

My oil gauge was working fine till last night. It would fluctuate a bit but always stayed close to 80 or in between 40 and 80 when the car was warm. However last night as I was cranking the car it shot to 40 and stays right there. It wont move at all. Not even the slightest. If I cut the car off it'll go back to 0. Crank it back up and it goes straight and dead on 40. No hint of any other movement at all. I'm kinda baffled by this.

Its a stock gauge on a 2000 z28

80... You need to replace the oil sending unit thats behind the intake. No way you have 80 psi or anywhere near that, cold or warm. Probably never TRULY get above 60 psi with these engines. Maybe at WOT when its cold. Your guage could be way off too. But if its just stuck in one spot its probably the sending unit.

Its kind of a bitch to replace them, from what I here. Mine is almost 12 years old...I think it needs to be replaced too, its just not moving like it always has.
