Default Hatch release

This may seem like an odd question, but when I hit my trunk release button under the dash, is my rear hatch suppose to "pop" open? Because mine doesnt. It seems to unlock it, but I still have to go back and pull the hatch up. You cant even tell its been popped. Is that normal? My DD's trunk pops open by about 4 inches when I hit the trunk release, and one of my old cars the whole hatch would lift as soon as you hit that button.

I'm just asking because it seems kinda pointless, and I'm trying to take as much weight outta the car as possible before next race season, so if all the hatch release button does is unlock the trunk, I'm going to delete it and just use my key to save a couple lbs.

Thanks!

Amanda

Add a spring to the release mechanism or you can try moving your rubber stops a little higher.

I did search, and all I found were topics on how to replace the hatch release, and how to make it pop open better. No info on what it is suppose to do bone stock. Thanks though.

That's what you want. It's unlocking, but the spring is not strong enough to push the hatch open. There's a good write-up about adding a stronger spring that will fix this issue. Try your search again.

Edit: LOL - see above links!!! Thanks, 6.0 Silverado!!!

Those are great, and very helpful, but I'm wondering if the hatch is suppose to open all the way by itself or not

no it is not an automatic hatch opening system. it just pops it up for you.

The release pops the hatch open and then the hatch supports (pistons on the sides of the hatch) press the thing all the way open. These hatch supports go bad over time and as they do, they won't have the strength to open the hatch all the way. Those supports are also weaker when its cold outside.

When I replaced my supports the last time, the hatch would open all the way by itself in the summer and would then press its way open very very slowly in the winter.
