Default Safe to drive with bad cats?

I just recently started to hear a metallic rattling sound in the vicinity of my catalytic converter, so it sounds like my catalytic converters are in the process of failing. I don't have a SES light yet, though. Unfortunately I live in CA, so aftermarket cat options are limited and very expensive. Would it be safe to drive the car out of state, say about 500 miles, without any negative mechanical repercussions? The car is a 98 Trans Am with 150K on the clock.

Thanks.

Doesn't seem clogged yet, but it does sound like a piece inside of the cat blew loose and is now rattling around inside it.

I don't know if anyone in CA would even install used cats, unfortunately.

Same thing happened when I was a 6 banger.. I drove around with it like that for a little and eventually got tired of the metal noise and straight piped it..

it's not hard at all to swap cats out. if you can find some good used ones, buy em. if not, do you have a relative in another state? if you do you can order some eastern catalytics or catcos to their address and have them ship them to you. if you plan on replacing the stock parts be prepared to spend a lot. it'd be cheaper to find a smog "hook up". when i priced my 98 exhaust it was in the ball park of $1k

Thanks. That's what my mechanic recommended too. I'm just going to order from rockauto and ship out of state. He'll install them if I can get them. The two I listed above are the right ones from Eastern, right?

There are two cats under the car, correct? If I want to replace just the one under the passenger seat, does anyone know which one listed here (http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...305458k1516140) I need? There are options for right/left/rear.

This is the only photo I have of the underbody from a while back:

Had same thing happen with my stockers too. I drove my car for like 6 months that way w/o any negative repercussions besides loss in power, horrible sulfur smell and the annoying rattle. Then I put my headers and catted y-pipe on. I never looked into any stock replacements, I suppose you could look for somebody trying to unload theirs n the for sale section. Magnaflow sells direct fit applications for cars in Cali but good gosh are they expensive.
