cat got so hot it burnt a hole in the carpet ????????
Very bumed out here.
i been looking for the right car for a while now and finally found it.
i drove a state away to picked it up and i really couldnt belive how nice it was.the car still looked like it was new.i test drove it and everything seemed fine so home it went of the back of a trailer.
i get it home and take it for a 5 min drive and notice some smoke underneath the car and see that the driver side cat is glowing red! i parked the car and this morning while checking it over i notice it burned a good size hole through the carpet and even burn a hole in the floormats.
MAN I WAS MAD.
i figued the cat was bad so i swapped them around to see what would happen.
the drivers side started to glow red again but with the passenger sides cat in place.
WTF
is the a restriction in the exaust causeing this or do i have a bigger problem?
man im glad i didnt drive it home ,i probably would have cought the car on fire.
any help would be nice.
thanks guys

its deffinatlu running rich if the cats glowing. extra fuel is being burnt up inside of the cat and getting it to hot. most likley a stuck injector or a cylinder or 2 not getting spark

thanks for the input guys, i havent got to mess with it yet as i been busy at work.
the check engine light did come on but i havent gotten the codes ran yet.
everybody seems to think that one bank is getting to much fuel.
the car did sit for a long while and probably has some bad gas in it.
that might have something to do with the problem.

i had a mech run the codes for me tonight and i forgot to write them down. but
the code said the bank is running lean, though it seems to be running rich not lean.
im gonna start by changing the o2 sensors and see it that fixes the problem.
are all the o2 sensors the same size?
i still have 2 from when the exaust was installed.

And yes, if you are running lean, the computer will ADD fuel.

i changed out the o2 sensors today and the plugs.
i ended up getting new sensons as the wires were to short on the ones i had.
man those plugs were a bear to change on the passenger side!
everything seems to be rinning fine now so i hope its fixed.
i still think the floorboard is getting a little warm though.
i have flp headers and high flow cats and on the driver side its really close to the floor board.
im gonna make another post about that problem.
thanks guys!

Extra fuel requires more heat to burn, so cylinder temps decrease with added fuel. Of course, there is a point of diminishing returns in either direction, but for our application this is true.
Glad you got your problem sorted out, it sucks to buy a car when the previous owner is not telling you the whole truth.

anyone have any ideas on keeping the heat off the floorboards?
i did fix the original problem but still kinda worried as the cat on the drivers side has only about a 1/2 in clearance between and the floorboard.
thought about wrapping it in header wrap or??

Wrong. Man there is some bad information in here. If the cat is glowing red its because the engine is running lean, not rich. In fact, part of the stock computer programing is COT (stands for cat over temp protection) where the computer will dump extra fuel into the mix to cool down the cats.

Don't listen to this guy..... geez you are so wrong its insane!
Lean burns up pistons not cats...cats glow red when TOO MUCH FUEL UNBURNT FUEL IS IN THE EXHAUST. The cats burn the fuel off glowing red. THE COT CUTS FUEL.
This idiot above is mixing up when the engines cylibders are running too hot the computer adds fuel to cool them down....BUT IF IT SEES the cats getting too hot IT CUTS FUEL!
OK lets go over this one more time.
RED HOT GLOWING CATS = TOO much unburnt fuel in the exhaust.<NO OTHER REASON CAN CAUSE THIS!
So if the cat is red you got a plug thats not firing or a stuck injector or a dead cylinder from other causes. This causes unburnt fuel to enter the exhaust causing the cats to overheat trying to burn it off..............purdy simple......
