i always put in 6... because that's what it takes, and you can put in an extra half quart if you want it won't hurt anything... **** you guys giving him **** for it, the stickies on this site don't lie...

man you have a problem, most peoples here is really nice. you ask question, we got answer. too much oil is not alway good, it will put alot pressure and start leak out the gasket, if you pcv is bad it and engine cant breath, it will also try to breath out the gasket, that how peoples got oil leak.

if we are talking about an LS1 it's not too much oil. 6 is perfect with a filter on my dipstick. and unless you have a motor swap in one of your 97's you don't even have that engine... whatever. /end
