Default car starter problem

So for the last few weeks on occasion my car will not start on the first attempt. You hear one click followed by no noise what-so-ever. But it would always start on the second attempt.

Now, being mr. smart guy, I just decide I'm going to buy a starter for my 207k mi car and replace it (the most probable culprit for my problem).

I get under the car take the two 13 mm bolts off, and find just one wire attached to the starter/solenoid. I remove it and put it on the new starter. bolt everything back up and start the car.

no start.

now it only turns once, but nothing afterword. This time, nothing gets the car started. sooooo... I put on the old semi-faithful starter, and i got the same problem.

Did I mistakenly yank some nearby wire? was there another wire i didn't notice altogether? What happened?

P.S. i did take the neg off the battery every time i messed with the car. no worries there...

Thanks guys for your soon to be input
Hamed

do you mean the short one that goes from the starter to the solenoid? i didn't mention that one cause i didn't mess with it, but if you include that: then its technically two wires that I've seen.
