Filter should always be changed, not just the fluid.

Dropping the pan changes 4 quarts... between the stock torque converter and the cooler there's another 8 quarts... the forward flush simply uses the transmission's pump to push fluid in the normal forward direction and you collect the old fluid from the torque converter out of the cooler return line while adding new fluid to the pan... there's nothing wrong with a forward flush.
