What happens over time that makes low mileage, especially a synthetic, oil to go bad?
I drive my cars less than 500 miles a year. It seems like such a waste to dump the stuff when it is still clean and clear.

But even it was 5 miles down the street....you'll be killing your internals.
That oil is no longer oil................its completely useless. You drive it with 2 yr old oil and you WILL damage your bearings.....oil is only good to sit for maybe 4-5 months after it has been run in an engine. Its not only mileage...its time limited after it has been run in an engine.

I'm not trying to be a smart *** but after 4 - 5 months and the oil is no longer oil? If that is true, I've ruined the engines in all 5 cars. Where does this information come from - can you lead us to something else that will substantiate this?

That 2 yr old oil is completely broken down.....thats what I said was no longer oil. And don't be a cheeseball...I don't mean its Cool-Aid or Ginger Ale now.......I mean its completely useless after 2 years and WILL NOT protect like its supposed to do.
I said after 4-5 months of oil JUST SITTING makes it a bad batch....IF it has been run in an engine. If it has not been run and it was just sitting there in the pan, then maybe its ok after 4-5 months of just sitting. But there's probably gonna be moisture build up in there, so it can still damage your engine if you run it after 4-5 months of just siotting and not running to burn off the moisture that builds up.
Its AFTER oil has been run in an internal combustion engine......that it immediately starts the breakdown process. 2 yrs...thats just ridiculous.......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_oil
And here's the most comprehensive article about motor oil that I have ever come across. It is long and covers everything imaginable; explaining the grades, viscosity, additive packages, sources and chemistry. Very well written and even a little entertaining.
