Default Need help asap

ok im working on a friends car, this is a 99 plymouth breeze

i changed the fuel filter and now it runs very rough and puffs out white smoke, and runs rich, but under acceleration it smooths out, let off gas and it will sputter and die, check engine light will flash under acceleration, any ideas?

Have you taken it on a highway drive since you did the change? I wonder if you had a really clogged filter and the PCM needs to go in to learning mode to get the mixture right.
