Default Mobil 1

Planning to change over to Mobil1 in my 99 Z28. Car has been covered in the garage since early November. Do I just drain it as is and change the filter without starting it or do I start it to get it warm? It has 5w30 oil in in now and am going with 10w30 Mobil1? Car has 54k miles on it. bought from original woman owner last summer. Runs good but its getting a 224r cam, LS6 intake and longtubes with ory soon.

Shouldn't matter, I would say get it warm and drain it but just draining it will be fine too. If your changing types and what not getting as much out as you can, warming it will be better.

Warm it first for sure! That way the car wont rev as high with an empty oil filter - even if you "prime" it first. The momentary lack of oil in the filter is no biggie, but with a stone cold engine it won't sound good at all. Plus what the others^ said.

Watch out with how warm you get it. Make sure you don't burn yourself draining the oil from the plug or the filter. In addition, if it is hot and you aren't paying attention it is easy to shoot oil all over the place due to the drain plug location.

If it's been sitting long enough to cool down, won't that mean more oil will have had a chance to drain down into the pan?

Oil is a lot thicker when it's cold, meaning it will take a lot longer for it to drain out of the pan. Hot oil doesn't take very long to drain back down into the pan and runs out a lot faster.

Honestly, as long as you give it enough time to drain it wont matter, I know of people who pull the plug out of the pan and let it drain for 7-8 hours before refilling....I guess it's a matter of preference.
