Default Sputtering and temp guage moving all over

I was driving my car last night my car started all of a sudden sputtering and popping, and the temp guage was going up, until it pegged, then going back down to normal. it looked like it was low on gas, but not low enough to where i thought i was going to run out of gas. I put some gas in it and it seemed to be alright, but then when i was driving it today the temp guage was doing the same thing, and so was the sputtering and popping, then my ses light started to flash, and now its on again. Did i bend a valve or blow a head gasket? ...or is it a spark plug or wire problem? I am going to check it tomorrow, and i wish i still had my HPtuners CD, but i cant find it. So im just wondering a couple reccomended places to start. Thanks everyone!

Some year F-Bodies 98-02 will not run properly with a failing or failed Coolant Temp Sensor. Mine won't run without it.

True. So today I hooked it up to a code reader and it had 5 codes thrown. Two were misfires in cyl 5 and two were o2 sensor bank two sensor two and one was for coolant over 268 degrees. I checked under the car and the sensor in question had the connector grind off somehow. So I'm gonna solder on another pigtail but I'm worried about the coolant code. Should I replace the tstat?

Why, it should be fine?

"one was for coolant over 268 degrees".. NO WAY was it at that temp... Pretty much says either the wiring or the sensor is **** up...

Was the car actually overheating? If not I'd replace the ECT sensor/connector first.

Hmmm...just re-read your post. ECT isn't under the car it's by #1 in the drivers side head. Was the code P1114? According to my manual the SES will throw that if the ECT reads 282 degrees for 1 second.

No it wasn't overheating. I'm replacing the pigtail now. How do I know which wire goes where? The pigtail wires are all gray and the connector is ground too far to match up

You haven't installed a new coolant temp sensor?

Get a new ECT sensor from a local parts store, should be a 2 wire sensor for 99-02, 98's were 3 wire.

Damn... i just did a compression check and cylinder 5 i think is dead. First we tried with the little rubber tester you hold onto the spark plug hole, and we got 60psi, then we went and tried a thread in type of tester, and we got 10psi. Then we tried cylinder 3 for reference, and we got 125psi, which is pretty good right? Then we tried cylinder 5 again and got like 5. The needle barely moved. Plus, there was **** spitting out of the hole the first time. Oil was on the press on tester too. Or at least, an oil like substance. Please tell me this is a top end problem and not a bottom end problem. PLEASE!!!!
