Ah - You kept your old outlet. Life would be a whole lot better for everyone if GM kept with the 2 piece thermostats and housings... Not sure why they started making them a single unit.

Default if it ain't broke don't fix it!

Yea, not sure why they have to change everything, not sure how this design would be more efficient. Maybe it seals a little better?

So, the old TS/housing does not fit in the newer pumps, but the new TS/housing fits in the older pumps, is this correct...?

old TS/housing = TS locks into housing wings
new TS/housing = two pieces

See this document on page #2. My read of it is that the thermostat designs are exclusive to the specific pump body. http://www.acdelcotechconnect.com/pdf/10JTI-064.pdf

My original factory housing was a two piece and the new ones have all been one pieces. My understanding is that all the new GM thermostats are the one piece design.

You are correct, i couldn't get the new design (2 pieces) to fit in the old housing. Can't remember exactly why it didn't fit now, but it wouldn't have worked that I could tell. Just went and bought one for a 2004 GTO, the part number is listed on the first page of the thread, good luck!!
