Default How does oil get on the knock sensors?

I am replacing the knock sensors on my 98 Camaro SS. They had oil all over them and in the bottom of the valley cover openings where they sit. There was no oil on top of the valley cover. Are there O-rings or gaskets below the valley cover that I need to replace? or is the oil in there normal? Thanks

Ryan

Yes, there are 2 rubber seals that goes in the valley tray, the knock sensors slide in the seal to prevent leaks. Seals have probably cracked over time.. The seals are not hard to replace, and not really expensive either, but You will need to go to the dealership to get them. local parts guys not too helpful with these. I got mine from my local dealer, they had them in stock.

Are they are under the valley cover then? so I need to remove the cover to replace them? or are you talking about the seals that are on the knock sensor wiring harness? Thanks

All this probably applys to my 97 too right ? I noticed oil on my sensor when I replaced it. How pressing of an issue is this since it's probably been doing this for awhile ? Just curious

97 is an lt1. totally different animal. Mine is setting knock sensor codes and pulling timing. So they need to be replaced. If you have no codes, I wouldn't worry about it.

I was just referring to the fact mine has oil on it too. Only code is for the oxygen sensors after my headers, knock on wood. Hope it stays that way.

Aren't the lt1 sensors on the side of the block though? I don't think that oil would bother them that much because it can dry or drip off. On the ls1 the oil surrounds the knock sensor and cant go anywhere. Then the sensor cant work right.
