Default What now?

It's been about a year since I've had my LS1 rebuilt. Unfortunately the car is not ready for the road, so since the built the car has sat running occasionally at idle for no longer than 5 minutes. I plan to have the car road worthy within the next couple months so my question is what now? Is this as simple as a oil change? Should I use a specific oil, and for how long?

wouldnt hurt a thing to change the oil, Personally I would change it, as far as what to run, I would only use a break in oil, Such as the comp cams engine break in oil, You can get it from summit, etc. you can also use a break in additive (joe gibbs, etc...)with conventional oil. You will hear lots of opinions on this, but when breaking your new engine in, Dont use synthetic oil, Every one has an opinion, but just ask any reputable engine builder, and they will say break it in with conventional, and then swap to synthetic...

How many times has it run for 5 minutes........?

Has it been dyno tuned?

1 year old oil is terrible to have in there.

Running it like you are at idle.....if it hasen't been dyno tuned or run HARD for its first few miles.....you could be ruining the ring/cylinder seal. You have to tear it down and re-hone and re-ring it if that happens....

Stop running it, until you can dyno tune it or run it like a sumbitch.

Thanks guys just the information was looking for. Its been running for moving purposes i.e.: shop, shipping container, trailer, to the garage. It has not been ran hard or on the dyno. So what your saying is you beat the hell out of the car by driving it hard during the break in process? I guess you learn something new everyday. Again thanks guys.

Even that is bad for a new engine....you are wearing away the cross-hatches in the cylinders and NOT letting the rings do it at HIGH rpm's and pressures, which is what you want.

I understand it this way:
The rings have very little pressure up against the cylinder walls at idle. As rpm's increase the rings get rammed up against the cylinders walls, allowing them to dig in and seat/seal against the cylinder walls evenly. If you don't do it that way, you could have lower compression in all cylinders and uneven wear from that point forward. Once the cross-hatches are gone, you do not get a second chance to break it in.......a rebuild is all that will fix it.

Every LSx engine since 1997 has been run HARD right after it was built at the factory......maybe a mile or two was put on it. But they were run hard....

Here's how it should be done:

Also....do oil changes at 50, 100, 200, 300 and 500. The engine will shed a ton of metal shavings the first 500 miles, and actually forever. I just did an oil change a couple days ago on my 167,000 mile 427ci.....I still get little powderized silver shavings on my oil drain plug. Normal.

You'll get many different opinions on what oil to use. All my engine has ever seen is cheap *** Castrol GTX 20w50.....for 167,000 miles. It still runs perfect. I suggest you do the same. There is absolutely nothing special about the LSx engine, its the same as every other V8 in America........it does not need or require special oil. Unless you have wacky tolerance purpose built race engine......you will not get better protection than you will get from regular old oil.....3,000 mile changes are a must.

Very interesting read, thanks again. You think this process can be done at home in the garage with the car in neutral?
