Default Alternator trouble

I recently pulled out an alternator designed for a competition system and am trying to install and wire a new standard alternator. Due to a different wiring set up for the old special alternator, I have no idea which lead on the four lead pigtail is the output. I understand that it is a one lead alternator and the basic idea of how to wire it, I just don't know which lead I'm pulling from.

So... what kind of car is this for. This was the last car a single wire alternator was used on:

It for a 98' Trans Am. I never saw the original wiring and could only go off of what people have told me and what I saw from the alternator that I had in it.

You should have one bid wire coming off the side post of the alternator and then one small exciter wire going in to the plug. Are you tryng to splice a new exciter terminal in? I don't recall the positioning, but you should have just one wire in that milti-terminal plug.

There's a picture in this thread: https://ls1tech.com/forums/stereo-el...lternator.html

If you look in the lower left hand of the picture, you'll see the plug with the one red wire coming out of it:

If you copy the picture in to a graphics editor and decrease the contrast, you'll see that the one terminal is in the 2nd position from the top as you are looking at the plug here.
