Default Clunking

whats up guys i have a 98 z28 a4 and today i noticed when first leaving the house, when the car was in 2nd gear when i would give it gas, not enough for it to shift down into first, but enough gas to jerk the car a little bit there was a clunking noise just wondering if it could be the transmission or maybe the u joint. sound came from underneath car. I checked the u joint near the diff and i was able to turn it about a quarter of a turn in each direction so it had some play is this normal?

Have you checked the rear end? Put 'er up in the air and spin the tires while listening for a the clunk and odd noises coming from the diff. Just a suggestion. Maybe your locker is clunking.

sounds like it may be the TA (torque arm) bushing on the transmission. mine started to go out and it made the same sound. i would check there, it is located on the driver side on the tailshaft of the transmission. the TA is the big bar that goes from the rear end to the tranny, hard to miss.
