I was able to get mine from the top by removing the coils and being patient.

If you still have stock plugs, your car is in desperate need of fresh plugs anyways

I remove the coil packs, then get it from the top. Your other alternative is get under the car and remove from the bottom with a short handle rachet. I have long tube headers
so going from the bottom is out of the question.

I don't disconnect any coils, rails, ect. I am able to get #8 out in 10 minutes by going under the car, with stock exhaust. Headers have made no difference. There's a 1" socket extension you'll want if you don't have it already.

I always do it from the top. You can leave out that back bolt for easy removal the next time if you wanted.

Once that back bolt is out the first time, you can leave it off. Then future rail removal takes only a minute or two. At that point it's much easier to do it from the top IMO. I never do it from the bottom.

I have done it from the top twice without removing the coils. I have like a tiny extension that has a little swivel. I stick the socket on the plug first, then put the ratchet on. It's not hard. Maybe my tools are just the right size. My hands usually have scratches on them after though. Lol But I seem to be able to get a lot of bolts some people can't. Maybe it's cause I've been turning wrenches my whole life.

FYI If you have the 98 - 99 stainless exhaust manifolds you will not be able to access #8 from the bottom; if you have the 2000 - 2002 cast iron manifolds you have the option of reaching from the bottom.

No reason to make it harder than it needs to be IMO. The coil rail comes out easily (especially once you get it done the first time, and delete the back bolt.....but even the back bolt isn't that hard if you have a small wrench with a ratcheting box end), and makes the whole job much easier.

On my '98 there is no rail, so I do that one from the top with all the coils in place. It's harder than the '02 with the rail removed, but not as hard as the '02 would be with the rail in place.

I did mine from the top only part that killed me was my spark plug socket got stuck on the plug because the acdelco plugs are wider and the rubber in the socket got stuck. So it took another 10 mins to get the dang socket off after tightening the plug.

I get to that plug from the top (both with and without the rail removed), but what takes the time is working 'blind', not being able to see what I'm doing, and I'm ALWAYS worried about cross-threading that plug opening's threads because of that.

Also, isn't that the cylinder which always runs the leanest, due to the way the fuel rail/injectors are configured??

I feel your pain. In my case, I have a wife with very small hands. She got right in there in just a few minutes and did it.
