It's like fatiguing a paper clip or piece of soft metal by hand, except that here we also have EXTREME heat cycles working on that lip, along with the weight/mass/force of the battery stressing it on every turn, bump, pothole, acceleration/braking, and compression of the road (along with possibly acid working on it, for those who still use a flooded lead acid battery).
