It may just need a good flushing. I'd try that before going to all the trouble of replacing it. My '99 Silverado needed a heater core flush earlier this year, and it was well worth the $90.00 to have my local dealership do it. Otherwise, the dash has to come out.

Well i think its past a flush. I can smell anti-freeze in the car when it is running. At the moment it isnt leaking into the floor board and im not losing fluid. However the smell is intrusive. Besides he new core is only $60. I know how to change them in a round about way but if someone has a video tutorial to take out the guess work that would be awesome. Its a 99 firebird 3.8 series II non supercharged. Is there a certain way to flush the heater core? Can i just flush it directly or do i need to drain the radiator fill with water cycle through and re drain and repeat that a couple times?

If you can smell antifreeze in the car it's leaking. It's pretty easy to do. You can get to it by removing the glove box. No need to pull the dash.
