Default Lifting Engine

I need to lift the engine off the mounts to get the oil pan out. Will running a chain to the bolt holes on the front of the head be a sufficient lift point? It just needs to be supported while I lower the kmember. If those bolts will work, what size/thread pitch are the bolts for those holes? Thanks.

Yes they will easily hold the weight. IDK the size or pitch though. Id use two of the factory egr bracket bolts and that should work.

They are the same pitch and size of the trans to engine bolts if I remember right.

I believe the bolt size is M10 x 1 for the front of the heads.

If they are indeed the same as suggested, the trans to engine bolt pitch is M10x1.5

Thanks for the info. Ive got one more question. How high can you lift the engine up with everything connected before you run into problems? Im trying to get the oil pan out and I only need about an inch to an inch and a half for it to clear the bell housing with the tubular k member.

That should be doable. I lifted mine about 2 inches before the bell housing hit the firewall. worse case scenario you can drop the k-member too.

from what I've read you can drop the K-member several inches (4"-6" IIRC) without completely removing the 6 bolts that support it, so you might be better off just supporting the motors weight from the top and dropping the K to get your clearance.

I think Im going to try just lifting the engine first. I know you can just remove the rear 4 bolts on the k member and let it hang, but I would have to remove the motor mounts to do this anyway. If I can get enough clearance with just the lift it would be worth it to save the time. Thanks guys.

I just jacked up on the transmission to lift the engine when I pulled my pan.

@99z2838- Where did you jack on the transmission? I was under the impression it was not a good idea to place the entire weight of the drivetrain on the transmission like that.

I used a 2X4 on the rear most part of the bell housing if I recall correctly. I had no problems with it, I just loosened the K-member bolts and pulled down as I wiggled the pan out.
