Default Sudden terrible running.

Went to run a short errand this evening. When I was almost to my destination the car started running really poorly. While I was driving the SES was flashing. Sitting at a light it was steady. When I was stopped at a light, the fumes were really heavy, even with the windows closed and the A/C on. I had a defective OBDII reader with me. It keeps shutting down and won't read codes properly. I did manage to pull the following codes. P0200, P0308, P0332. This same thing happened about a week ago but cleared up almost immediately. A little history. This car sat for almost 5 years. It ran pretty poorly at first but continued to run better as time went by. I have put about 3500 miles on it and it was running pretty well, but still not perfectly. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't mean to sound harsh but...

You have a car that has been sitting for 5 years. You did zero maintenance in light of the extended sitting(?). You started driving it. It ran poorly, but you kept driving it. Then the SES light was flashing (which is serious - you have misfire condition that can damage your car). You did nothing. You kept driving it. It threw a handful of codes. You ignored them and kept driving it. It did all that again, and you did nothing and kept driving it.

Um... Maybe try starting with the codes man.

If he did no maintenance I'd start with maintenance first and then move to the codes, no maintenance will result in chasing your tail.

List what each code is for.

But it sounds like one or both FRONT 02 sensors are shot.

P0308 is miss fire on cyl 8. This is is why your light is flashing
p0200 is an injector control circuit malfunction, this could be triggering or triggered by your p0308
p0332 is a knock sensor code, probably triggered by the other two codes.

Check your injector wiring, paying special attention to cylinder 8, look for broken wires, corroded connectors, etc. You may also have a stuck injector or failing injector. I've seen them fail intermitantly before and can kind of be a pain to chase down, this may be what you are experiancing. Also check out the plug wires, make sure you don't have one arcing etc..

The original owner said they had replaced the TPS and plugs in preparation to sell the car. I took them at their word and haven't checked that. I immediatly replaced the air filter and put in new Mobil 1 and a filter. I ran injector cleaner through the first couple of tanks of fuel. That seemed to fix most of the issues. But not all. I would occasionally get the knock sensor code. The only consistant issue I had was that I would get inconsistant feel of throttle response. But a friend checked the TPS with his OBDII tester and it was consistant and linear. This heavy miss issue first occured last week but only lasted a few minutes. Then about a week later, I ran a short errand to Best Buy and that is when it really started to run terribly. I haven't started it since then.

Looking at your sig it's an lt1 car, which makes me think you have a coolant leak from the water pump onto your opti spark

In my sig you will notice that I have a 96 SS with the LT based engine and a 99 (30th Anniversary Trans Am) which is the LS engine car. The subject of this post.

No it said both vehicles in his sig when he started the thread, I looked at his sig and wondered which vehicle he was talking about.

True, when I when I went digging for flow charts in alldata I saw 96 and checked them for that, which is really a mute point since OBDII codes are standardized. But like was pointed out earlier, the possibility of opti spark being in the equation or not is a big factor.

Ok, I am ready to make an accusation as to what is going on now. You bought a car that has been sitting for a LONG time. The previous owner says he replaced the plugs. Well, cylinder 8 sucks, no one wants to replace that plug. If I was not an honest person and was just swapping in new plugs real fast so the car will run well enough to sell, NOW WAY am I going to bust my knuckles and spend an hour on plug #8. I'll bet you he just changed the other 7 (maybe) and "neglected" to mention he skipped #8. Your car is running like a dog because it hasn't been firing (well) on all 8 cylinders.

1) Inspect your wires
2) Pull an easy plug and:
a) See if it is indeed new
b) See if it is the correct plug for the car
3) Change your fuel filter!!!

Speaking of the fuel filter...did you drain the gas tank? Or are you running on 5 year old gas?

I like this guys thoughts on it, it sucks to think, but very possible they did 7/8th of a tune up. Pull the plug boot if you can on 8(pass rear) and see if you can tell that it's like the other plugs.
