Default Cooling issue

Wasn't really sure where to put this, But I have a 1998 Camaro with th350, 4000rpm stall, and 4.11 gears, and stock cooling system with a 160 tstat. Its pretty much a dedicate drag car that I drive on the street every once in a while. The issue I'm having is if I just let the car sit and idle with both fans on the temp will sit at about 160-170. When I start driving the temp will go up to about 205 (I'm not sure if it will go over this since I haven't tried), then when I come to a stop the temperature will start to go back down again. I've never seen this in a car before, heats up while moving, cools off while idling. Any insight?

Maybe you have a plastic bag stuck in front of the condenser/radiator.

Check your lower air dam.

T-stat could be sticking partially closed.....not fully opening. 180*F tstat is always better than a 160.

I do have a trans cooler up there, but its always been there. I'll have to take a look. I'll also change the tstat for good measure. Thanks

Temperature rising when in motion can be a sign of a failing water pump, or in most cases a sign of a coolant leak at high pressure

Its actually normal to increase in temperature initially as you start driving, especially in the hot summer. But have you tried cruising steady on the highway for 10-15 minutes.......then it should not stay up there, it should come back down a little bit.

How hot is it where you are......?

Its friggin hot as hell down here right now....and my car has been running unusually hot the past week or two....IN THE DAY. As soon as it starts to cool off a little around 5pm my temps come way down and stay down.

That damn pavement is 150-160 degrees F........in the day time.

I'm not gonna start chasing a problem that isn't really there.....

I haven't really cruised in it for a long period of time without stopping. Its more of a dedicated drag car with a 3.5 front tire on it, so it doesn't do well on long highway cruises. The temperature differential is pretty big,165 at idle to 205 while cruising.

I hear ya. I drove today from the beach side in Lauderdale to I-95.....took about 20 minutes. Got to 215*F. Got on the highway for about 15 minutes and it only came down about 10-15*F.........When I got off the highway it immediately went back to 215*F and even a little more as I drove for the next 10 minutes till I stopped.

The pavement is so damn hot.....thats the "cooling" air for the radiator....150-170*F ambient air temps getting scooped up by the lower air dam.

Not good.....Tonight I'll drive around and it'll never get above 185*F in city driving with the A/C "on".

I think it's weird it goes up when driving. The ECT has always gone done, even with a bottom breather like these cars, when moving. I would examine the water pump or a clog in the radiator. Sounds like when a load is applied to the car, the system is no longer able to keep pace.

With my BeCool Radiator, I usually am around 190 with the A/C on and 185 with it off. Hottest days I may get close to 205 on hot asphalt.

It is a stock radiator that has quite a bit of miles on it so I think its time for something different. Plus I put a used water pump on it when I built the engine. I have a forged LS6 going in it this fall with an electric water pump so hopefully this whole thing clears itself up with that.

Posted this in the drag racing forum post.

Are you still running your front air dam? Are there any obstructions in front of the radiator (ie, trans cooler, condenser, etc)? A decent upgrade is a stock lt1 radiator as the core is larger but you should be fine with the stocker. The issue is rpms are creating more heat than your system can get rid of with the airflow through the radiator.

I have a suggestion, check your lower rad hose and see if it has a spring in it? The spring holds the hose open under high suction conditions. I've seen the lower rad hose suck closed when the engine accelerates from the suction action of the water pump. This can cause the weirdness you are experiencing.

I've never noticed a spring in the lower rad hose and this is like my 10th Fbody.

A spring would not be a stock item.
