Question Alternator splash guards...

My alternator keeps getting fried every time it rains decently heavy. I guess someone forgot to put the splash guard back in years ago when the motor was pulled. Anyone know where I can get one or have a dealer part number?

Any parts store or your local GM dealer can look it up for you. And don't be surprised if your local GM parts guy or auto parts store gives you a good discount. They realize that they must be more competitive on price if they want to stay in business. They can also be a good source for advice, especially the older guys.

No offense to the younger guys on the list here. But judgement comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgement. And us older guys have often had a lifetime of bad judgement. Especially about car stuff.

The part number is 10402846 but it has been discontinued so will not be available at a dealer. You may be able to find one online. You can see a diagram showing it at gmpartsgiant.com to confirm that it's the part you need.

I'm the original owner of my 1998 Z28 and do not have any shield. My original alternator lasted about 17 years. I had it rebuilt because the cheap Chinese alternators are garbage and do not last. maybe that is your problem.

You can get a pretty fancy one of a early half 2000's BMW, it has a duct to get cold air to the alternator.. Dont know if they are the exact same size but appear close..

Just a wild thought,, now that I think of it my Jeep could use one,,

You can have mine if you pay for shipping. I took it off to replace my power steering pump and I couldn't figure out how to put it back on so I just threw it in the garage. I'm never running my car in the rain again so I don't need it.

op, is the alternator wet when you check it and you have problems? i would recommend upgrading that red wire while you are there since changing alternators is a bad habit for you

Lol I sat under the car for like 15 minutes trying to figure it out. I can do heads and cam swap, change the oil pump and rebuild the power steering pump, but I can't put a ******* piece of rubber around the sway bar and connect it with two push clips for the life of me. Just made me feel so stupid I had to get a beer.

alternator getting wet makes it go out? Cheapo depo alternator maybe. Water aint gonna hurt a good alternator. I dont have a splash shield my my GTO, alternator at hte bottom just like that. It rained all day yesterday, I never had a problem. Now When I had an oreilly alternator, Two of them, failed. Now have a factory delco one on there.
