Labor for replacement of PS pump and hoses
could some of you guys tell me what is a fair amount of labor time for replacement of a Power Steering Pump and associated hoses in a 2001 WS6 TA?
FWIW, I’ve been quoted 8 hours labor time, at $110 /hr, which appears excessive to me.
Thanks.

It’s a little strange because they’re doing some work that they seem to be charging a decent price for, but then other stuff is just ridiculous.

I sent my daughter to get an alignment and was quoted over $900 to replace a wheel hub assembly and upper ball joint which included a $90 fee for work done to the brake system. Purchased MOOG parts for just over $200 from Rockauto and did it myself and I didn't even have to open the brake system. They are out to make $$$ plain and simple with 100% mark up on parts. Hell even the local parts stores were more expensive on the parts.
That being said - 8 hours is still excessive. I would go to another shop with a different book. I wouldn't expect that you'll find a place that will do this for less than 4 hours of book time. You may also find a better rate, also.

If you have tools, this is a pretty fair job to get into in order to save some money. A helper makes it go faster, but it's a really messy job. If you have time to do the work, you can also take the pump off and send it out to TurnOne for a proper rebuild (vs. taking your chance with a junkyard rebuild from an auto parts store) and get a nice pulley put on it to bolt it back up easy.
