Default Labor for replacement of PS pump and hoses

Hello,

could some of you guys tell me what is a fair amount of labor time for replacement of a Power Steering Pump and associated hoses in a 2001 WS6 TA?

FWIW, I’ve been quoted 8 hours labor time, at $110 /hr, which appears excessive to me.

Thanks.

Best,

Pull off the belt, undo the hose clamps, put something under the unit to catch the fluid and pull the hoses off, unbolt the pump and pull it out. Install is even quicker. The only thing that takes time is cleaning up any spills since hydraulic fluid is too slippery to stick to paper towels lol

Thanks guys. What I thought. I did talk to the guy today, but he’s kind of trying to stick with his story saying “that’s what’s in the book”, but I told him talk to his boss and if he wants to tell me something that’s not a joke we can talk about it.

It’s a little strange because they’re doing some work that they seem to be charging a decent price for, but then other stuff is just ridiculous.

Best,

1-2 hrs plus parts. Been there and done that!

I sent my daughter to get an alignment and was quoted over $900 to replace a wheel hub assembly and upper ball joint which included a $90 fee for work done to the brake system. Purchased MOOG parts for just over $200 from Rockauto and did it myself and I didn't even have to open the brake system. They are out to make $$$ plain and simple with 100% mark up on parts. Hell even the local parts stores were more expensive on the parts.

Many shops will charge you book time. This is an average time. Some jobs are less. Some are wildly more. This protects you from the instances where the jobs go upside down and take even more time. (We don't want to be liable for a mechanic's screw up that turns a 1-day job into 2 days.)

That being said - 8 hours is still excessive. I would go to another shop with a different book. I wouldn't expect that you'll find a place that will do this for less than 4 hours of book time. You may also find a better rate, also.

Haven't done one myself on a ls f-body so I was curious. Looked up labor times in all data just now. Book rate for the pressure hose 2.8 hours, return hose is 1.4, r&r pump is 2.5 plus an additional 0.5 for the transfer of the reservoir = 7.2 hours. Although, in the procedure calls for removing the pulley for the high pressure line, like you're already R&R'ing the pump. Yea I'm sure it can be done in less, than that but book time is book time. That's how all dealers and auto shops price out jobs, if not they are screwing the customer or themselves.

BTW - If you have a P/S cooler on the car, this is a job where you will want to eliminate it, while you are at it. (Lots of threads here on the topic.)

If you have tools, this is a pretty fair job to get into in order to save some money. A helper makes it go faster, but it's a really messy job. If you have time to do the work, you can also take the pump off and send it out to TurnOne for a proper rebuild (vs. taking your chance with a junkyard rebuild from an auto parts store) and get a nice pulley put on it to bolt it back up easy.

replacing the pump and hoses is one of the easier jobs to DIY....a rented pulley puller/installer from auto zone and a few tools will save you much $$$$$

a few threads here to show you the way....
