Default Dropping engine from bottom

This is something I have done several times but done it with a two post lift. I don't have access to mine anymore so I was gonna do it with an engine hoist. I looked at several pics of it being done but I'm not sure what they are hooking the chain to.

Anyone that's done it before care to chime in?

Yes, I wrapped one chain on per side around the front sway bar bracket. If you zoom in on the second pick you can see a bit of the chain wrapped around the mount.

i used 5000lbs chains cut to length 6’ ,I think, and quick joins from Lowes, and one large hook on the hoist.

Oh didn't even thing of that, I was gonna try the core support. How bad was it to get the engine out from under it once you had the car up?

So, I had an atv jack under the k-member, and some pittsburgh steel 12 ton jack stands to hold the car up. Once you get the car up high enough, you can slide the jack stands under, move the engine hoist out of the way, and roll the engine out.

It's all a bit of a shuffle, and make sure whatever you have the kmember resting on is secure and stable.

Not a fan of using just an engine hoist to support the weight of the vehicle so I went with the baby steps approach.

I've done it around the core support, with a thick towel wrapped around it. I used a tow strap instead of a chain though. With the towel wrapped around it, there wasn't any damage done. I used the tow strap without a towel on a part out vehicle and bent the underside of the support somewhat, plus the top lip.

^ thats kind of what I was thinking, this car is too far gone to save so its likely gonna get crushed once its stripped. I was hoping to get everything ready remove the tires and drop the k member on a furniture dolly so I can lift the car and roll it out, but was sure how much the long legs on the engine hoist would be in the way.

I did it around the core support on the donor car for my project. It didn't damage it despite being a rusty mess. The lower radiator support was already bent and rusted through, so if that did get damaged you wouldn't even be able to tell anyway.

I ran a tow strap along each side of the radiator support and then hooked the straps centered over the radiator with the hoist. Also used floor jacks and just moved upwards little by little.

So once you get the front end set on a dolly, you lift it way up, way up. Then place jack stands toward the end of the "frame rails", closer to the middle of the car. Then you can take the engine hoist out of the way, roll the front end out from under the car. That's how I've done it. I can't do it with the engine hoist still in place.

looking at this I may take the front bumper and all that jazz off, might make it a bit easier to get it out in the end. I ahve someone that wants most of the suspension as is, so i dont really care about making it go back together easily

You need a table jack and 42" under the core support.

it can come out and go back in complete.

We took the intake off because we didn't have the car up quite high enough. I got the table jack from harbor freight almost 20yrs ago.

Well, I don't notice it - which amounts to a recommendation of sorts. I can't remember why I picked it over the ATI, but I did want something better than the gm damper.

You can go out the side, that's what I've done, but the struts aren't the clearance issue, they fall to the sides. It's the intake that sits the highest. Lift it, support the car so you can get the hoist out of the way and then you can move it forward a bit as needed and scoot it out the side. I've done 3 like that now. The worst part is when the dolly gets caught in the garage floor expansion joint lol

did get this done BTW, since I was gonna strap the car anyway i just cut the lower rad support out, put car dolleys under the k member and tranny, and used jacks to get it up high enough and just rolled the thing right out the front without using the engine hoist. Not how most would want to do it im sure but you dont have to lift the car very high to go that route.
