Default Socket part number

Hello everyone. I tried searching and looking up the part number in the sticky, but I was unable to find the part number for the light bulb socket for the driver's side, tail light, turn signal bulb. I tried going through all of the brick and mortar parts stores, e-stores like Rock Auto and came up with #gm 12141493, but all of the descriptions for this socket list it as merely a tail lamp socket. Can this be used for the rear turn signal? Is it the correct part? If anyone has the correct part number, or knows if I can just use this part, that would be greatly appreciated. Also, why the hell is this thing so expensive?

12141493 is the correct part number for the two inboard sockets on each side (the outer socket is smaller for the single filament bulb). But unless you're set on buying the OEM socket, replacement 3157 sockets are readily available for under $10 at any auto parts store and even Walmart.

Thanks for the response. I noticed that 3157 takes a blade type bulb, whereas the original socket takes a round type bulb that you have to push and twist in. Can I just switch to using the 3157 and blade type bulb? Thanks again...

Sorry... my memory gets less reliable as I get older.

You are correct - the Firebird uses 2057 bulbs which are a brighter version of the old standby 1157 bulbs that have been used for many years (at least since the '70s). They are push and turn bayonet style. You can get that type of socket just as easily as long as you remember that they will probably be labeled for 1157 rather than 2057. Or you can use the 3157 sockets since they work exactly the same other than having different bulbs. There is no real difference in performance between either type of bulb so the choice is yours. If you are only replacing one or two sockets then it would probably be best to go with the type that matches the others so you don't have to worry about different bulbs when they burn out.

The catalog link I have in this thread will guide you to the socket parts, if you just need to replace a liner, gasket, etc. and don't need to wire in a new pigtail: https://ls1tech.com/forums/pontiac-f...t-gaskets.html

Even if you need to replace the entire socket, you can still use the instructions we have on this site for splice-less socket replacement by disassembling the socket and then re-assembling it around the wires and terminals.

My memory is going as well; I neglected to mention that my socket issue is with my 97 camaro and not my 99 T/A. Nevertheless, your wisdom still applies. Just want to make sure though: will the 3157 fit in place of the original socket, with the tabs and lock? Pep boys had a dorman socket that fit the taillight hole but the locking tabs didn't match up. I suppose I'll have to repeat this process with my firebird at some point.

Thanks for the link and the heads up. Unfortunately I bought a socket from a local pep boys, assumed it would fit the taillight, only to find the locking tabs didn't match. But, I can use the spliceless technique on the other sockets. Thanks...

If you get the Dorman 85881, it should fit just like the factory socket except that it takes the blade style (3157) bulb. It's available on Amazon for about $7.50. Unfortunately, I'm starting to see what you meant about the price of the bayonet style socket... even on Amazon, the Delco LS49 socket for the 2057 bulbs is almost $45. For that kind of difference in price, I'd go with the Dorman and the blade bulbs. Hell, for the price difference you could replace all four sockets and still have beer money left over compared to the Delco part.

Thanks for the part number and the reply. I will look into those sockets because I'll have to do them all eventually on both of my F bodys...

It looks like the socket (without the TPA or seal or pigtail wires) is under $5 at Mouser.

On my 2001 Firebird the bulbs are...

Corner Taillight bulbs - 194/921
Brake/Turn Taillight bulbs - 3157
Reverse bulbs - 3157
CHMSL bulbs - 921

Side Markers (front and rear) - 194

Front Turn Signals - 3157

All those are wedge not bayonet.

I've replaced them all with LED and a no-load electronic flasher.

I remember my 2000 T/A using 3157 wedge bulbs as well. Perhaps the difference is that it's a 97 Camaro in this case. Both the GM parts catalog and Rock Auto list the bayonet style for that model.
