Default Turn Signal Relay

Okay. I know this may be a bit vague but I'm faithful that if anyone out there will have an answer it will be someone in this group, so here goes... I recently replaced the turn signal relay (behind the drivers side knee-plate of my 1996 WS6 Trans Am), fixing the issue with the turn signal bulbs not flashing. The problem is, I'm pretty sure a mouse can fart louder than this thing "clicks" (even at idle with the radio and air OFF) and I would really like to know when I have the turn signal activated (especially since this is only a 96 and doesn't have any fancy indicator like cars do these days to tell you you are driving around the world with your turn signal on)! Forgive the sarcasm, and sorry as I know that overall this is an odd question to begin with, but does anyone know if these RELAYS come in different "volumes" ? And if so, where I can get a relay that can actually be "heard"?

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, aftermarket turn signal flashers (they're not relays) vary in loudness by brand and model but I don't think anyone has ever catalogued which are louder and which are quieter. You might try searching in the wiring section for someone complaining "flasher too loud" that might have some comments on relative volume. Metal can flashers tend to be somewhat louder than plastic ones. The other possibility is getting a motorcycle flasher - they are generally louder because of the environment they're used in.

They metal thermal flashers are all similar. I recall that they are held in a clip that mounts to a rail under the dash. If yours is not held in that position and is dangling free or resting on a pice of dash pad/insulation, that might be muffling the sound.

If you really want loud, you can wire in a buzzer/chime/beeper. Many newer car's typically have something like that because their flashers are electronic modules without a loud audible click.

I thought so too on the name, but why are they often listed this way?

This is a common expression even though it's not accurate. It's sort of like calling turn signals "blinkers" or automatic headlights "DRLs". A relay has a low current circuit which controls a high current main circuit. A flasher has a similar high current main circuit but it's not controlled by a separate low current circuit. The old fashioned thermo-mechanical flashers that came with f-bodies work much like a thermostat... the current flow heats up the bimetal switching strip which bends and interrupts the current flow, letting it cool off and close the circuit again. Electronic flashers use a portion of the input current to run a timer that opens and closes the main circuit.
