Default Power steering pumps

I believe my PS pump is on its way out. It’s not whining but the steering effort, especially when not moving has gone up quite a bit. It feels pretty close to having no power assist at all. But it’s doesn’t whine. Upon researching pumps it looks like there aren’t really any replacement options that aren’t a gamble as far as failing in short order or right out of the box. A new (non) reman Cardone that comes with the reservoir is something like $130, and a few of those reviews said they failed in fairly short order. $600 for a Turnone pump is a little steep for me. Would having the stock pump rebuilt be a better option than a new Cardone? I bet a rebuild would cost more. I’m not sure what it needs but I think it’s more than seals because it doesn’t leak other than a little seeping from the cap. The fluid gets brown fairly quick though & it doesn’t have a cooler. A while back I sucked out and refilled over & over to the tune of about two to three qts and the fluid would always come back brown. At that time the steering effort wasn’t as hard as it is now, I was just shocked at how brown the fluid was so I tried to get a little fresh fluid in. Is a rebuild even worth considering? What’s the way to go here if one doesn’t have $500 for a Turnone pump?
Also does anyone have a recommendation on a pulley puller & press that work without issues won’t break the bank? This will be my first time going at this. Thanks in advance.

How often do you drive the car and how is it used? Summer toy, daily, autox?

I put a cardone on, but if I was hard on the car I’d probably go turnone.

The pressure relief valve on the pump may be sticking. When this happens, it can bleed off pressure at low RPM, (when it shouldn't) which results in less steering assist.

This is our sticky on self-rebuilding. You could take the valve apart and clean it all out and see if that solves your problem before investing in a new pump: https://ls1tech.com/forums/general-m...pair-pics.html

It seems that there are a lot of poor quality "new" pumps on the market and remans rebuilt and sold with bad cores. I had mine rebuilt by TurnOne to avoid any complications. They turned it back around to me in a week and I recall it was for a very reasonable price. (I recall spending $100 more than a cheap reman to have my good core rebuild.) Even though you may not see it on the website, you can call them and arrange for a stock rebuild.

If you have a good core, getting a reputable shop to rebuild it is always a great option (assuming it's not a daily driver where you need it back on the road ASAP). I had a shop local to us (Midwest Remanufacturing) rebuild a brake booster for me a couple of months ago. They did a great job, rebuilt it on-site using my original core (no other cores were even available for this ancient application). They also do PS pumps. Turnaround there is about two weeks though.

Looks like the company that used to make these pumps is now Nexteer Automotive: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nextee...***%20Division.

My advice is not to go reman, period. After my original started to leak, I had two of them installed. One leaked worse than the original, the other completely failed after a couple of months, as in no power assist.

My next move was to the new Cardone unit. My only complaint is that it was noisy. But it has held up and worked fine for several years now.

Normally I would agree on going new, but if you can find a local rebuilder with a good reputation, one that is doing the work on-site with your original core, you might be better off with that option assuming you don't need the car back on the road immediately.
