I've been using this oil for at least ~15 years, and I thought that the only multi-grade variants that could be had in the VR1 line were 10w30 and 20w50...how are you getting a 10w40? Is this a new offering? Or maybe a synthetic variant? I've always used the conventional version. I just didn't even know it existed.

Default Oil Snobs don’t look at this

I used to laugh, scoff, and poke fun at Walmart Supertech oil users. My apologies. These are just a few samples. Look into it. I haven’t found a bad sample yet. Maybe there are a few out there I don’t know. But it appears like it’s just as good as everyone else.

I run strictly Amsoil in everything I own. My Duramax get 1 change a year and gets a sample every time.
As for my LS powered stuff, My wifes 11 Camaro SS (cammed making 470rwhp annual as well) 5w30
My wifes 94 Impala SS with LS2 swap has 5w30 in it as well. Not driven enough to worry about changes
My sons 408 used 5w50 it made about 550rwhp
2011 Jeep Wrangler
Plus all the other components have Amsoil in them. Tran & diffs. BUu as for coolant. everything gets Dexcool

PLEASE do not run royal purple. From day one that is was a marketing scheme. I would rather run bee honey.
Look up Project Farm on youtube. He did a full test on multiple oils. The two top were Amsoil Sig series and Pennzoil Ultra platinum plus. It was close.
Amsoil also make many types of fluids. Even high zinc. I sell a lot of the high zinc stuff to many old school flat tappet guys.

German Castrol (0W-40) from Autozone if it's on sale with an extended life filter.

If it's not on sale, other synthetic oil + extended life filter that's on sale from O'Reilly or Autozone.

Brand of oil is meaningless......keep it clean and your engine will last. Thats it. Oil weight, yea, depending on climate or if the engine was built with specific tolerances.....otherwise, 10-30 or 10-40 or 20-50 works in all normal V8 enginesm which is exactly what LS engines are, basic engines.

If you want to go fast, (like a cheetah) you need to use vegetable oil. Straight from the supermarket:

Not exactly.

Those of us that still have dinosaur engines with flat tappet cams have a somewhat special concern, so not just brand but also product line of oil will matter in these cases. Clean oil of the correct grade isn't always enough, but I do agree that it is in most cases with most modern engines.

Nice to hear that Amsoil also makes a product like this. I'm sticking with Valvoline VR1 for my high zinc/phos needs because it has worked well for me for ~15 years, but if that product ever goes away then I'll have no choice but to look elsewhere.

Default 0w40’s harder to find these days?

Man, try getting your Castrol 0w40 from Walmart or any other place (online) besides a parts store. The parts stores are the most expensive place to buy fluids and filters. Do some cross shopping.
That being said it seems like 0w40 is getting a little hard to come by. I didn’t see any the last time I went to Walmart, and I just now looked online at Autozone & Oriley’s and the Pickens were slim there too. I remember when 10w30 was the mainstream and when 5w30 started to come along and eventually became mainstream. Both are a little less common to see in the 5qt jugs out in the wild these days than they used to be.
At any rate, for fluids, filters, wiper blades, etc avoid the parts store. Their markup is HUGE. Washer fluid probably being the worst.
@RPM WS6 Purolator makes the filters for Mobil now for whatever that’s worth. I think Champion used to but they’ve since switched companies.
Does anyone have a part number for a longer than stock filter for the LS1?

Walmart still sells the M1 0W40 at all their stores in my region. They are sometimes out of stock, but not just in this grade (sometimes in just about every grade), and it's because of what you mentioned above - the price there is so much better than the auto parts stores that everyone goes to Walmart for this. I can find M1 0W40 pretty much any day at any local parts chain, because most folks aren't willing to pay that price and instead go to Walmart and buy them out. LOL.

Even the latest M1 filters still say "made in USA", so at least there is that.

I think the longer filter is the M1-206a. Stock size is the M1-107a (which is what I use).

Thank you sir. I may stick with the stock one but it looks sort of small. I’m sure it will suffice, I was just expecting bigger. That’s what she said.

Super tech full syn. 20 bucks for 5 quarts and haven’t blown anything up yet. Little beater truck has 394k miles on it. 15w40 in my boat 5.7. Gets changed 25 hours. So cheap 15w40.

Default Dexos

One more thing I think is worth mentioning. DEXOS is a certification, not an ingredient. I bet it’s an acronym. Oil companies can choose to have their oil tested and at a cost have the Dexos logo oil their bottles. Other oils may meet the DEXOS requirements they just chose not to purchase the licensing. Chrysler’s certification looks like a part number instead of the name of a chemical but it’s the same game. All motor co’s have one I’m sure. I think GM’s is just the only one that sounds like it’ll make your car run faster.
If you’re worried about warranty, if the oil meets DEXOS, etc requirements (it’ll say on the bottle) it is to my understanding that it won’t violate the warranty to use it. I don’t think they’d even really test it that far to find out what brand it is or what certs it passes, only to see if there’s metal or other “crap” in it. I work for a construction equipment dealership and they send out oil samples all the time. I’ve never seen a claim get rejected due to the type of oil. That’s saying something because this place, just like every other, would like to get out of any and all warranty situations because they don’t make any money off of it. There’s no way all of our customers are using the recommended and sort misleadingly lead to believe “required” OEM brand oil.

Fuchs Titan truckplus 15/40 in all my ls cars, currently own 3 of them. One cammed ls1, another unopened, and the 8000rpm LS2 in sig. The same oil goes in all the daily drivers and work vehicles also. Even the ride on lawn mower. Engines stay mint inside

I use Blackstone Labs for my oil analysis and have been happy with their product. I received their Newsletter today, which I rather enjoyed. If anyone is interested in getting super-technical about oil and wear, you might find some good nuggets here: https://www.blackstone-labs.com/info...n/newsletters/

Mobil1 & Purolator filters cut open
If I buy German Castrol 0W-40 and a filter from Walmart it's $43 and if I buy 0W-40 from Autozone with a filter right now it's $37. The Walmart oil comes in a 5 quart jug too and the Autozone oil comes in 5 1 quart bottles which I like better. The 5 quart jugs are easier to spill.

No kidding huh? In my part of the world it’s the opposite. $27 from Walmart vs $37 at Autozone. Buying single quarts here is expensive too, but I always have to buy a couple each oil change since my cars all hold more than five quarts. My truck takes 7 and the two single quarts always cost more than half of what the five qt jug costs. The quarts are like $8 each or so vs the $30’ish five qt jug. I’m assuming the quarts are more expensive due to the packaging.

Your right, I was confused with the brand that I did this with. It was not VR-1 Valvoline. I suppose 2 quarts of 20w50 and 4 quarts of 10w30 would net a 11.6 W35 weight. ???
