As for my LS powered stuff, My wifes 11 Camaro SS (cammed making 470rwhp annual as well) 5w30
My wifes 94 Impala SS with LS2 swap has 5w30 in it as well. Not driven enough to worry about changes
My sons 408 used 5w50 it made about 550rwhp
2011 Jeep Wrangler
Plus all the other components have Amsoil in them. Tran & diffs. BUu as for coolant. everything gets Dexcool
PLEASE do not run royal purple. From day one that is was a marketing scheme. I would rather run bee honey.
Look up Project Farm on youtube. He did a full test on multiple oils. The two top were Amsoil Sig series and Pennzoil Ultra platinum plus. It was close.
Amsoil also make many types of fluids. Even high zinc. I sell a lot of the high zinc stuff to many old school flat tappet guys.
If it's not on sale, other synthetic oil + extended life filter that's on sale from O'Reilly or Autozone.
Those of us that still have dinosaur engines with flat tappet cams have a somewhat special concern, so not just brand but also product line of oil will matter in these cases. Clean oil of the correct grade isn't always enough, but I do agree that it is in most cases with most modern engines.

That being said it seems like 0w40 is getting a little hard to come by. I didn’t see any the last time I went to Walmart, and I just now looked online at Autozone & Oriley’s and the Pickens were slim there too. I remember when 10w30 was the mainstream and when 5w30 started to come along and eventually became mainstream. Both are a little less common to see in the 5qt jugs out in the wild these days than they used to be.
At any rate, for fluids, filters, wiper blades, etc avoid the parts store. Their markup is HUGE. Washer fluid probably being the worst.
@RPM WS6 Purolator makes the filters for Mobil now for whatever that’s worth. I think Champion used to but they’ve since switched companies.
Does anyone have a part number for a longer than stock filter for the LS1?

I think the longer filter is the M1-206a. Stock size is the M1-107a (which is what I use).
Even the latest M1 filters still say "made in USA", so at least there is that.

If you’re worried about warranty, if the oil meets DEXOS, etc requirements (it’ll say on the bottle) it is to my understanding that it won’t violate the warranty to use it. I don’t think they’d even really test it that far to find out what brand it is or what certs it passes, only to see if there’s metal or other “crap” in it. I work for a construction equipment dealership and they send out oil samples all the time. I’ve never seen a claim get rejected due to the type of oil. That’s saying something because this place, just like every other, would like to get out of any and all warranty situations because they don’t make any money off of it. There’s no way all of our customers are using the recommended and sort misleadingly lead to believe “required” OEM brand oil.
