Try adding a filter to your cart at Autozone. They also have a deal that it's $36 for 5 quats of Mobil 1 + an STP extended life filter or $40 for 5 quarts of Mobil 1 + a Mobil 1 filter. Always check: https://www.autozone.com/circular and https://www.oreillyauto.com/currentad

It's the same $27-$28 for Mobil 1 or Castrol from Walmart here, but then the only filter available is $16. Since i have a gen 2 LT1 (just a small block chevy) I always put my car in as an 80s pickup truck with a 350. The filter you're supposed to run for LT1s is small and the truck filter is much bigger and it fits. (Not the correct filter here, disregard, the old school truck filter is S5XL).

If you have a NAPA close by, just watch the online sales. They discount 5 quart containers all the time. I buy oil when I dont need it. I probably have seven 5 quart jugs on the shelf right now. I have 2 WIX filters for every vehicle I own.

He's referring to an actual "box" of oil, it's just a box with a plastic bag liner and a spigot on it, like this:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-A...4?from=/search

The Walmarts in my area sell it like this too, but I don't really have any interest in buying it this way. Just looks like a mess waiting to happen. I'm OK with spending a bit more to get the jug rather than having this box lying around. In this format, it's only $59 for 12 quarts worth of oil so there is a price advantage for folks who really want to save every penny.

As I was reading your post this is exactly what I was thinking!

TBH I even find the jugs a mess waiting to happen. It's much easier to overfill the funnel or valve cover with them and have a ton of it come out.

Ohh I see. “Bulk oil.” I know a guy who buys his wine like that.. Yeah man even though it’s cheaper that one is a tough sell. I’d rather dump a pre-measured amount in just once instead of having to pour it into a container and then again into the car. If you’re only doing one car have to keep a half full bag of oil around for several months.

The jugs can be cumbersome to pour sometimes but the price gap is worth the risk for me. I wish they made 6 qt jugs honestly. Does anything take 5 qts or less anymore?

The very first time I saw one of these boxes of oil at Walmart, those wine boxes immediately came to mind! I'm not a wine guy at all, but I've seen folks buying those before. At that point, maybe they should just be getting 55 gallon drums of wine delivered to their house.

I'm definitely with you on this. I guess I would probably give it a try if I had two cars that both needed 6 quarts of the same grade oil, then I could just split it 50/50 and change them together. Otherwise, it just seems like too much hassle.

The newest engines I have are 2.4L Ecotecs, both in Malibus. They still take 5 quarts, but I don't know if anything was still using that engine after ~2012 or so. I'm not sure if the 2.5L DI engine that replaced the 2.4 has the same oil capacity or not.

Now and again at work we sell oil in 55 gal drums (15w40) to the bigger companies like The Scott’s Co (people who make mulch & fertilizer). I think it’s up close $1,500 a drum now.

If getting in 55 gal drum what would be the shelf life on that? If you are doing changes every 3 months is a few cars and have a dedicated racer that might make sense but that could take years to go through?

I doubt that oil would ever get 'old' as you should get through 55 gallons within a decade, unless you have just one car that gets one oil change per year. You would end up with oil as old as some of the cans in my collection.

It can sit in sealed barrels for years but I’m not sure if it’d stay good long enough to do 36 oil changes though once it has been opened. I think moisture would be the biggest concern.
Just now I looked up what the dealership pays for 55 gal and it’s $1,100 some odd, and we sell it for $1,496.

Unopened, full containers will be fine for a very, very long time - especially if stored in reasonably controlled conditions. I routinely use oil that's been in my basement storage "warehouse" (always at 65-75°F, 30-40% humidity) for up to ~6 years before being put into service (I like to always have stuff on hand when I need it, so I buy when there are deals and/or when it's readily available and then just rotate the inventory). I used to have multiple LS1 cars so I kept a ton of M1 0W40 on hand, I've just continued that habit even though I only use it in one car now.

I love NC01TA's antique oil cans above - "mellowed 80 million years"... Haha, love it!

Personally I use Moble 1, 5w-30, as recomended by the manufacturer for these LS1 engines. I even changed the oil filler cap to a Corvette one that states this right on the cap.

157k miles, daily driver, uses maybe 1/2 quart a year, no smoking, no blow-by. clean as a whistle last time I pulled off the valve covers. Change the oil in early spring, mid summer, and as late as I can in the fall. 3 times per year. Drive about 20k miles all year.

Change it, check it often, keep it clean. That is about all you need to do.
Exactly………brands are meaningless. Why…..no matter what people use, everyone gets long life, no crazy 10,000 mile explosion stories, no weird failures piling up in the LS world, nothing bad is going on. Everyone uses different brands and weights…..

Outcome is the same. Period. It does not matter.

I got 10+ years out of a big stroker LS and all it ever got was off the shelf Castrol GTX 20w50. A 441ci, Cola crank, Manley pistons and rods. It was a max effort N/A engine…….my first built motor. Ran like a top, 100% hassle free. People were like,” oh man you don’t run synthetic”. I was like “ hell no, why waste my money? It’s an engine like all the rest for 50 years.”

I just changed it every 2500-3000 and that is ALL that matters.

I run a fleet of waste trucks and we run Dino 15w40. Interval of 450 hours and hardest use possible. Emission trucks that get idle and stop and go and low speed driving. Oil sample every change. The oil sample comes back normal. Some of these engines have 20k hours of run time. With Dino 15w40. Change it and change it often.

I am having trouble finding the jug in my area. My first oil change will be a few months, and I plan to run Mob 0w40 and a wix filter. Minus amazon Oriley is the only place that has wix filters...
