Default Shutter on the highway

Long time no post here. I guess that means all has been well with the TA - and it has!

So this morning, I'm on my way to work (at highway speeds) and I feel what I think is torque converter shudder. It happened 4 days ago briefly on the highway and it seemed to come and go as quickly as I turned my music down. I wasn't 100% that it wasn't the woofer hammering me So I pull it over and kick it into 3rd gear (I have it tuned to NOT lock up in any gear but 4th) and it did it as I accelerated getting off the highway - so obviously not the TC which is good. No check engine light on or flashing for a misfire. I had just filled up with some 93 octane but I was 30 miles down the road when this happened. I did a 180 and drove back home and didn't have any issue at all driving back.

I didn't have my scanner with me, but I'm thinking fuel. I picked up a fuel filter and injector cleaner (I've never used any) and she has 406,000 miles .....

Anything else that I might be overlooking? Thanks in advance.

I’d say it’s been a while on the wires but probably around 20k on the plugs. I’m going to swap the fuel pump, fuel filter, clean the air filter this weekend and go from there. If it were misfiring I would think that the CEL would be flashing and a code set. There was none.

Dirty MAF caused by an oiled air filter. The MAF misreads air under acceleration and cuts the fuel when it shouldn't.

Good point. In that case the issue would only be the restriction of air passing through the MAF as the tune fails it - being an SD tune.

was it a shudder or a stumble? Meaning was the feeling drivetrain or was it the engine?

I had a 2000 Z28 that would hesitate or stumble from like 2500-3000ish and that was the MAF. Changed it out and it was perfect again.

Dont overcomplicate things, start small, like you are. Clean the MAF, do some routine services.

As for the fuel, do you regularly fill up at that particular gas station? was it a nice gas station or a run down fill station?

It "felt" like a shudder but it wasn't - as I eliminated that when I shifted to 3rd gear (no lockup in 3rd) and the issue remained. The MAF isn't doing anything. I could unplug it as I'm running a 100% SD tune.

I do regularly fill up at that station and haven't ever had any issues with their 93 octane. I'm going to change the fuel filter, clean the air filter ....etc ... this weekend.

If you suspect a fueling issue and don't think it's due to poor sensor input (such as improper MAF readings) because you are operating exclusively in SD mode, then I'd start by checking fuel pressure.

Sounds like a stumble, for some reason. Could be water in the gas, as simple as that.

I actually haven't driven it since that day, but part of me wants to drive it and find the "smoking gun" while logging the drive. The other part of me wants to just swap the fuel pump and filter, drive it log it and see if it's fixed.

Might check the harmonic balancer to make sure it hasn't delaminated and is working its way in one direction or another.
