Default Heat and starters

Hey guys just wondering what everyone is doing to protect their starters from excessive heat?? I have a starter that's starting to leave the chat in my 91 camaro with an iron block LS with Hooker turbo setup and the crossover pipe comes fairly close to the starter. Some days I'll just get a click with no crank but if I keep trying it will eventually crank and start. I have triple checked power at the connections and that is good to go. What I haven't done yet is see what kind of corrosion is on those connections. When it does crank it cranks fast. Only thing I haven't done yet is check for any possible corrosion on the starter connections which I'll do tomorrow.

They make heat shields and starter blankets specifically to protect starters from heat (especially with headers). I have a shield like this on my '71, and I used to use a universal starter blanket on my '89 Formula (sold that car long ago). Both products work(ed) well in my experience.

Still not enough.

You made the post asking for advice, what you have going on is clear symptoms of heat soak which you're tracking on so that's good. Corrosion wouldn't be a factor in the equation why I said what I said. Take it or leave it..

I have the hooker turbo manifolds on my turbo LS third gen and bent up a little heat shield from embossed aluminum heat shielding, found it on amazon.
Seems to work really good.

In for answers - I purchased a new starter for my LS1 and it specifically states to "not use a blanket". Not sure if it is one of those stickers similar to "racing voids warranty" type of bs. I thought I saw a while back people were modifying a camaro starter shield off a newer model as well.

How old is the starter? What size battery cables are you using and where is the battery located? How old is the battery?

I used these to cover the wires going to the starter.

I considered these starter covers but I don’t have a heat soak problem so I didn’t bother. But they sure do look nice.

Not sure why it would say that. I've never used a blanket in an LS-application, but had no trouble using it for the SBC in my '89. In fact, I used one exactly like these:

Worked fine for the rest of the time I had that car. But these days I have an aluminum shield for the starter on my '71 SBC car.

Probs like 3 years old now. Using 1/0 cables for power and grounds. Battery is barely a year old, but it is an Optima battery
