Default Oil Weights

I was wondering, aside from the manufacturers recommended oil weights, does anyone suggest any differnt weight to run? Not looking to go too light though. The oil does need to be able to tolerate FL heat. I'm just looking to see if there's perhaps a more... "oily" oil. ie, something that will protect the motor slightly better.

Also, synthetic vs organic? What's everyone like to run in their LT1?

well you could go with red line or amsoil, but honestly if your just driving the car your fine with mobil 1 5w30. i wouldnt change oil weights theres no reason. now if in the middle of summer your running a track day at sebring then yeah id say step it up to 10w40 at least. but for just driving in florida any synthetic 5w30 will be fine, just not royal purple.

I run 10w40 year round. Our winters down here in houston arent cold enough to warrant anything lower and its just extra protection against damage. Now that the motor is a built motor, i try to play it as safe as possible

I used to run the 10W 30 high mileage mobil oil in my old motor.. no problems and ran quiet and smooth.. In the new motor i have Mobil 1 10W30 is going in.. mobil 1 oil i hear is a bit thinner then any other oils if you put two of the same weight in comparison..

Use the German made Castrol 0W30 synthetic. It's a thick 30 weight, almost a 40 weight with the full benefits of being a 0 weight. Where's Patman when ya need his humble opinion....

I had castrol syntec 10w30 switched to castrol syntec 5w30 and noticed about 5psi higher oil pressure all the time with the lighter oil.

Mobil 1 5w-30 and 10w-30 are frankly poor choices for the LT1 analysis proves this with higher wear metal numbers, reason is the stuff is closer to 20wt. the LT1 wants something like a thick 30 or a low 40wt. I know GM speced M1 5w-30 for the Vette, I don't care the proof is in analysis results it is not a good oil for this motor(but is great for others) if you want to stick with M1 use the 5w-40 or the 0w-40, or the Castrol Syntec specifically the "made in Germany" stuff in the 0w-30 is possibly the ultimate oil for the LT1 as verified by analysis.

Amsoil 30wt. will work well too as they tend to run a bit thick, really the only other oil I would stay away from would be the Royal Purple street stuff the race stuff can be good just not the street.
