Default just got an LS1 and..now i think alternaters goin out

Ok..i went out to a dead battery..i figg'd no big deal i left my fuzz buster on...so i charged it drove it around..and the guage..for the battery inside the car slowly went down til it hit yellow then it kicked my amp and my cd player off...i got my current tester out and tested battery it was at like 11.94..with the charger on it...then i started the car and turned the charger off and it was at like 10.24..and dropping...

I think my alternater bit the bullet..my dad said something about sometimes they come unplugged is this true..

Also how much will this put me under a new alternater and how hard is it to install?

I doubt it is just "unplugged". The wires are pretty secure on our alternators. A remanufactured one will cost you about $120. If you have small hands the install will not be too bad. You will have to do it from underneath I think. If I recall correctly it will be a PITA to get to the wires, unbolt it and slide it forward and down. I think. You will know when you get there...

I paid $170 for an alternator from Autozone(I think that was after the core charge though). It took my friend about 2 hours to swap it out for me.

make SURE you unplug the weather-tight connector that will plug into the top on the backside while its still attatched. its got one TINY red exciter wire coming out of the connector and they like to rip out if it does, you can take the connector apart and "fix" it like i did, as have 10,000 others.

There are a lot of electrical loads attached to the BAT
line that will draw current if they get defective. Alternator
rectifier packs can be damaged and leak back; check this
with the engine off (key off), disconnect the alternator
power wire and check current; any reading there is bad.

If there's no back-leakage in the alternator, disconnect
the + cable from the battery, attach a shorting strap to
reconnect it and put the ammeter across it, then detach
the shorting strap (all this, just to not throw the surge
load from power-up through the 10A meter fuse). Watch
the amps. See if there's a draw; if so, start pulling fuses
until you see it drop or disappear; note the ones that make
a difference, to chase down that branch later.

If you see the battery voltage declining but no external load
then you have to think shorted cell, self-discharge.

My Delco battery (like some others') developed a leak at the
side posts. Check yours.

i swapped mine with a 200amp unit this weekend.

3 bolts, 2 long ones up front and one short bolt in the back.

theres a weathertight plug with one red wire, and then the alt to battery cable which on my stocker was a royal pain in the *** to get off since the whole bolt would spin instead of the nut just holding the cable on.

not hard at all to replace, just make sure you got enough room under the car to work with.
