Worried about oil filter size
I'm going to make the switch to Mobil 1 5w30 tomorrow, but yesterday I went to the dealership and bought a filter, I brought part numbers with me ( UPF58 and PF44 ) and the guy said he's never heard of UPF58 and that PF44 has now changed to PF46..
Does that look like the right filter? I said to the guy that looks extremely small for a 5.7, my intrepid 3.3 takes a bigger filter than that and he said even the big trucks use it..

get the PF-59 with the anti-drain back valve.
BTW-After several bad oil analysis reports (I never had a good report with this oil) I'll never use Mobil 1 in my LS1 again.

LS1's use a very small filter compared to earlier versions of the 5.7 liter. Since our filters are located in an upright position, the anti-drain back valve is pretty useless for this application.

and look at some of those reviews.
I will NEVER run mobil 1 in my LS1 engine again, I did 4 oil analysis and got four bad reports, perhaps its working differently for you-I'll trust my reports. My oil anaysis are posted at the above site and I'm pretty sure a couple of times here (could have been ls2.com). Just search for it.
Mobil 1 5W-30 and 10W-30 are just barely a 30 wt oil, after just a couple of thousand miles it's sheared down to a 20 weight. I even added one qt of 15W-50 to the five regular quarts. Oil did get thicker but there was NO improvement in my analysis, the last batch I dumped out at 1620 miles-it was the first half way decent report on this oil that I've gotten.
This topic has come up before, like I said - do a search.
I was so pleased with the analysis results of the German Castrol that I now use I'm going to keep using it.

That's what she said...

i recently switched to the long (pn: 2006) k&n oil filter and it boosted my oil pressure a bit.
i WAS using the FRAM filter because i thought that an oil filter was an oil filter
i was under the impression that the anti-drainback valve helped prevent the oil from draining to protect against dry startups. at least that's what it said on the k&n filter box.

As a suggestion, you could use a Mobil 1 oil filter. The information that I read some time back put Mobil 1 oil filters at the top of the list right behind the Purolater Pure One. The direct replacement filter is a M1-107 but I use the longer filter which is a M1-206. I also use a Filter Mag oil filter magnet. There has been a lot of speculation as to whether the oil filter magnets work or not, but I will continue using it just for that "perceived" extra protection.

If it were me I would look at a PF58 if you want the AC Delco filter. Otherwise I'd look at a Wix 51522, NAPA Gold FIL-1522 (made by Wix), or a K&N HP2006 (best choice IMO - especially if you want high flow), which all cross-reference to the larger PF58.

The antidrainback valve is most certainly not useless, which is why all new GM cars now get filters with them. The antidrainback feature will keep the oil in the passages above the filter upon shutdown. Without the ADBV, this oil directly above the filter would go back to the oil pan. So even with a vertical mount filter like on the LS1, the ADBV does indeed help.

Oils used in your car can vary and people can feel one way or another about it. Some people might complain about a syn oil like "Mobile 1" being bad but alot of times it is because of how it was applied.
If your using a general non-syn oil for a good amount of miles and then just out of no where you go to a fully syn oil, your going to encounter alot of problems... Some consisting of gasket leaks, poor lubercation, or even the wieght of the oil changing fairly quick.
I would suggest, if u started with a non syn oil to possibly go to a blended oil. I used durablend personally to kinda prep the motor for a possible fully syn oil change. Id run this for a good 4 or 5 oil changes and then changed to a fully syn oil.
From personal expirence... I have no leaks, a friend of mine who went from a citgo motor oil straight to a syn oil... sprung quite a few leaks. So this would be one suggestion for future reference.
Back on subject... I know the model numbers for a CarQuest oil filter for a 99-02 5.7 are "B4006", you could go to the local shop and have them interchange the numbers (like what u did with the other brands and product/part numbers)... Goodluck on your search for the RIGHT filter!
I hope I was to some help!
When using a full syn motor oil whether it be castrol, mobile 1, valvoline, etc...
