Default Random overheating??

Well since i put the cam in the car has randomly over heated, i mean like once a month it will get really hot, at first i thought it was a bubble in the coolent, so i uncapped the radiator and ran the car for 10-15 minutes and its been fine, then a month later it will over heat again, the theromstat is relativly new, although i have heard of them going out once they are new before, i thought if the water pump was going out it would throw a belt, anybody have any ideas what i could check??

When does it overheat, on the highway, in the city ?
If the waterpump is going bad, you won't throw a belt (never heard of that before), but you will often (but not always) get some leakage from a weep hole. IMO sounds to me like your water pump is going out

water pump can throw a belt off if the bearing in the pulley gets torn up and starts to wobble. when is the last time u had the coolant flushed, its possible you have a clog somewhere in the system, what temp does it run at usually? may also check for bags or other road debris caught up in the condensor area, may i ask how many miles you got?

it only does it at a stop, or that is when it begins to heat up and then it will either stay that way or lower as i drive, i drained and refilled the radiator when we did the cam/oil pump, but didnt run water through it, i just put fresh coolent in it, it has 125k on it, but i dont know if its the stock water-pump or not, it looks different to others i've seen (just the part the belt is on) but it may just be a 98 thing, i also have bubbles in my oil, could this be related?

did you use a 50/50 mix with dexcool and water? you could try some additives such as water wetter.
next i would check another form of temp monitoring, using autotap or a handheld to give you a reading.
exactly how hot does it get? if you overheated it at anypoint it is possible to warp the head and that can cause coolant making its way into the oil. so if your oil is overfilled or milky at all i would think about doin head gaskets and resurfacing the heads.

on another note, what wheel size/tire size and springs are you using in your sig pic

then i would move to inspecting the cooling system for clogs or road debris blocking the condensor.

then move to a coolant flush with 50/50 dexcool/water and use a bottle of water wetter.

are your cooling fans comming on?

yeah, mine would heat up quite frequently when at a stop, and then slowly come down once i started driving again. Its probably because chevy decided to give us electric fans that dont turn on until the shell of the car has started to melt!! Once I got hptuners and set the first fan stage to activate at 185 till 180 and then the second stage to activate at 195 to 185 I havent had a problem with it running warm since. How hot did urs get? Id reccomend letting it sit and warm up, with the hood up and see if your fans are even coming on, and at what temp they activate. I also found out through my hp tuners, that our temp guages (at least for 98's) read somewhat low. when its at the 185 mark on the guage, hp tuners says its around 195 or 196!!!

i'll have to check the fan temps, i'll have to wait til i can burrow hptuners this week, ~220 im guessing, i know where about 209 is on my guage because when i had it hooked up to the computer i checked the temp and posistion, and it was a little above that

If you let the fans stay at stock temps then you
need a coolant system that holds pressure well.
The stock -low- fans don't come on until above
boiling and that's at the sender, not at the hottest
spot in the heads necessarily. And the high fans,
forget it.

So a loose cap will weep and puke like mad right
about the time your fans are almost thinking about
coming on. Unless you have a nice natural breeze
or are rolling, then you might have enough air to
cool the motor.

your temp sending unit could be going bad,
however i think you would be getting bad readings more often...

i think your trouble is in the fans... as stated before.

get ahold of someone able to set your fan temps lower... should be alright after that

oh yeh... and you are running 50/50 mix right? i did not see anywhere in the post where you answered that...
that would be the first thing i would change...

stock low fan temp is at 226*

on 98's its just to the right of the vertical position on the guage. personally i'd be horrified to see my temps ever reach 226*

I would start with flushing coolant as the car does have 125K on it as stated who knows if it was ever done
