Default Why I won't use German Castrol

I read all the stuff here about how the "german" Castrol 0w-30 is such a good oil for these cars. Well after not even 3000km of use I will no longer be using it. Here's why. My car is a 02 Z06-i have the CH mod( catch can) inline with my PCV system. Well after about 3000km, not even, the CH catch can is almost 1/4 full of black German Castrol. It's even sucking oil through the valvecover. I have no scientific data to disprove that this oil is not good-this is my opinion. Driving has been a good combo of city, highway and wot abuse. I will be going back to my "no name brand" Canadian tire 10w30 synthetic as of today. I don't who makes this stuff but i ran it all last year and the catch can would barely get a drop in it. I feel this oil( castrol) breaks down just as bad as the new mobil 5w30. It's hot up here this year too-most days are close to 90 degrees. I can't see how an oil that turns to water so fast can bve good for the hydraulic roller lifters-even the car ticks more at start up. Again these are my thoughts and I'm not trying to persuade anyone-this is just what I have found.

its getting hot down here, its almost 105 at times, and im really thinking about installing an oil cooler. My water temps sit at 200 degree.

Are you speaking of the new M1 5w-30EP breaking down? I suppose you can tell that an oil is breaking down by looking at it.

I have had the older M1 5w-30 to 290° on a road course for 2 days and 7700 street miles and it has not broken down:

M1 5w-30 7700 miles

Your is the first complaint for GC that I have heard of.

You will never hurt a good synthetic on the street. Its very hard to get a street driven car over 240° oil temp. Drag racing won't do it either.

Dont worry im dont do my racing in a straight line. I dont think its a good measure of a cars overall performance. and the rush isnt long enough either.

So far this drag season my Amsoil XL 5w30 is holding up really well... not using any oil at all after a couple months of use. We'll see how it handles the road course in about 3 weeks.

What i found is that the Castrol and the new Mobil 1 not the extended life break down and even get past the catch can and inot the intake. i pulled off my TB to see how much was in there was a good film of oil in the intake tract. Now oil in the cumbustion chamber will lead to ping, my car is at 11.5 so I cannot take any chance with detonation. I found this "no name" brand from Canadian tire never broke down as fast and there was never anyhting in the intake tract. Maybe it's becasue of the humidity and heat this year but I will be switching to 10w30.

At 90º GC 0w30 is as thick as 10w40. Disregard the 0w rating. Too many people think this oil cant be run in the summertime.

I tried the German stuff as well and found the extra clicking and clanking while warming up when it was cold in the Spring was a real turn off. I too went back to my Canadian Tire oil, I am using 10W30, but regular dino oil not synthetic. My car is a slapper at 2000-2500 RPM until warm and only at light throttle, the synthetic made it sound much much worse.

What makes you think you can tell if an oil is breaking down by looking at?? The color of oil means virtually NOTHING, unless of course you can see peices of metal flecks, lol. Think it's hot in Ontario? I'm in south Texas and don't have any problems running 0-30. Every car is different I suppose. Maybe you're getting so much oil in the catch can because you need a new PCV valve? Just a thought...

No I checked the PCV and replaced it. I didn't say the oil is breaking down and your right-there is no way to tell by looking at it. My way of knowing is by looking at the catch can and then pulling the TB and looking inside the manifold. I didn't get this with the brand x oil-oil in the manifold is just not a good thing-it leads to pre-ignition or ping. Hell for all I know it could test out 100% and show excellent wear-i just won't use it.

If you are concerned, get a used oil analysis including TBN from Blackstone. Or better yet, order #46 "Dyson Analysis" and really find out what is going on with your oil. My results to date with the German Castrol are the exact opposite from yours.

I don't know what to say, other than the fact that every car I've run this oil in has shown excellent numbers in oil analysis, and I get no consumption at all in either of my cars, even at almost 8000 miles on my current interval in my Corvette! The engine sounds perfect, no funny noises on startup.

I ran German Castrol for 14,800 miles in my 2003 6.0 1 ton cargo van.Swapped the filter at 7,000,toppped it up and drove it.

The engine didn't use any oil the entire 8 months it was in the crankcase.I plan on running it for 20,000 miles this time around.

Patman your car is stock-add some mods like headers then listen to it-or better yet an agressive cam.Manifolds kill sound like you wouldn't believe. Also did you put a catch can on? How do you know your not getting oil in your intake?
