water pump replacement?
water pump question The Firebird I'm buying is in great shape, only thing wrong is the water pump is starting to leak
The guy is knocking 500 dollars off the price so I can fix it when I get it
My question is how hard is it to get to and to replace? Is it something that can be done in a few hours or should I just save myself the hassle and take it to a mechanic to do?
Also is this a normal thing that happens in most firebirds with 90k+ miles?

Napa has the best prices on GM parts. I paid $145 for my pump and if you buy a repair manual for '93 to '02 and it will show you step by step how to replace it. It took me 45 minutes to change mine. The hardest part will be getting the hoses to come of the pump because of the heat cycles. You'll need one gallon of coolant and fill the rest with regular water. A 75 piece tool set from Wal-Mart is all you need to repair most parts on these cars.

You can easily do it yourself, the pump is pretty simple to replace, its 6 bolts and about 4 hoses to pull off, since you have a 98 you will have to buy some metal waterpump gaskets (2 of them) since your car came stock w/paper gaskets, you should be able to get it on and off w/out pulling anything else out, but if its tight you can pull the fans out, which is cake, good luck and make sure you let the car get to operating temp w/the radiator cap off then run it for 10 mins then put the cap back on after your done and have topped up the coolent
